Alles over Industry News: Which Automaker Is Trying To Negotiate With The UAW Via The Detroit News? |

Jalopnik | 2007-09-05 00:18:26
Considering all of the automakers have a public message of "shush" when it comes to the current round of negotiations with the UAW, it's weird to see specifics showing up in today's Detroit News. As the automakers and the UAW look to create voluntary employee beneficiary associations (VEBAs), entities set up to assume responsibility for hourly retiree health benefits. These VEBAs only make sense if the automakers are able to transfer the health care liabilities to the UAW at a discount. But everyone kind of expected the nitty-gritty with union leaders -- who agree with the companies on this in principle -- would be occurring behind closed doors. Except some "executive" at some "company" seems to believe the Detroit News is part of the area behind their closed doors:
One executive told The Detroit News his company could afford 60 cents on the dollar, but said 70 cents would be "pushing it."Given the author, we've got a pretty good idea which member of the band formerly known as "The Big Three" is trying to negotiate with the press on specific VEBA funding percentages, but we're wondering which automaker y'all think it is -- anyone have any ideas? Alles over Once Upon A Time: Using Belkin's Weird Powerstrips |

Gizmodo | 2007-08-15 19:02:44
[Cue Fairytale music...]Once upon a time, a geek found that he had way too many gadgets, and too few AC outlets to use them all at once. A simple powerstrip would have been a easy fix, but because he considered himself a serious gearhead, he wanted *special* powerstrip.
galleryPost('belkinpowerstrips', 4, 'Belkin PowerStrips');The first one he tried was called the Compact, by Belkin, but had room on top for 4 small sockets, and on its side, 4 great big sockets standing vertically. It was terrific, but maybe too simple; and anyhow, there were actually two more powerstrips by Belkin that were more interesting. One, called the Clamp-On had a claw on it for being mounted on a desk. And one was huge, and had a cable organizer. One was very, very good, and one sucked so bad, it made the geek want to plug it into a heavy, heavy VCR, climb into a rowboat, and drop it to the bottom of the sea.
The "Clamp On" powerstrip with the claw on it had a box with a picture on it. The picture explained what the claw was for -- attaching it to desks or 2x4 planks of wood! It appeared to have space for 4 small power plugs, and 2 large blocks. This could be useful for keeping outlets off the floor, and close to his work area. But alas, the stupid powerstrip's jaws were too wide to clamp onto a desk, with it's puny spring loaded rubberized and orange teeth. It sagged, and threatened to leap to the floor when the outlets were filled with hungry three-pronged plugs. And too narrow to clamp on a 2x4. It only fit on his weirdly shaped Swedish furniture. (Despite the photo on the box, it was limited to grabbing onto the edges of things no greater than 1.5-inches thick.) A real engineer would have used a vice grip, he thought.
The next powerstrip, Conceal was gigantic. It was at least twice as big a the other powerstrips. What a waste of space, the geek thought, as he thumbed the hard plastic case. There was a single lonely outlet on the side of this whale of a powerstrip. Strange. Where were the other outlets? Right after he'd finished this thought, his finger happened upon a button. Click!
The case opened up, and inside were 10 outlets -- 6 little outlets, next to gold-plated coax, ethernet, and RJ-11 power filters, and room for 4 big blocks. All through the top of the case were nooks for cable routing, and a space to pass all the cords through the top. This was the perfect powerstrip for a livingroom, where the cables need to be tucked away nicely.
AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. THE END...FOR NOW. Dun dun DUUUUN.*
(I've been writing too many news pieces, lately. Had to break it up. Humor me.)

(AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)" border="0" />AP - Bruce Willis says being a film star hasn't brought him many perks. "It's really ... weird to be famous," the 52-year-old actor tells Vanity Fair magazine in its June issue, on newsstands May 8. "It gets you into restaurants easier than other people, but beyond that, personally, you could set fame on fire."

this is an updated and expanded earlier articleMacbeth color chart image from Mysterium sensorFor the camera hardcore, here's a Macbeth color chart shot with the Mysterium sensor with their test mule camera, no color correction applied, with a digital version of what the thing is supposed to look like in the lower portion of the image - follow the link in the top posting from Jarred. There's also a link on the second page with composited squares from the "should be" comped over what they have at the moment, makes it much easier to comprehend. Plus, apparently Graeme has done some tweaks to get it even closer. This is all well and good, but the catch is will it be this close or closer in varying light conditions (tungsten vs. daylight, for instance), in low or overexposed situations, will skintones still look good even if it is mathematically still "right," and will all this survive compression with Redcine OK? Another random thought - will the HD-SDI have the same curves to match the Redcine output? Will the in-camera curves be upgradable/editable easily? This is a LUT issue.Hard numbers on the ISO rating of the Mysterium sensorThere is also discussion of the ISO rating of the sensor based on empirical data here, started off by Jim Jannard himself stating that the sensor seems to have an ISO rating of 160. Much much geeky discussion ensues, gets over my head quickly (I'm just a po' post guy).Discussion on the boards about RedThere's also just good interesting discussions in general about stuff like quick conversion for reconfiguring the camera and other stuff. As always, the Red forums on DVXuser.com and DVInfo.net are worth checking out. Some facts and a lot of conjecture about the break-in at RedOther Red news - looks like the Mysterium sensor and the Frankenstein test mule camera were not taken, so that's great news in terms of no slowdowns, but the shiny prototype from IBC did get stolen. I'd also be ticked if I were the Red crew if somebody got their test sensor (I'm guessing there's only one working prototype, but I don't know for sure). In the "totally pure conjecture based on no hard data whatsoever" category, while it still smells like some kind of corporate espionage and not random theft, the thieves weren't completely competent/thorough/successful (thankfully) - while they did get a lot of data and some prototypes, they didn't get some of the most valuable stuff - the working sensor, the test mule camera, etc. One camp would posit that the thieves didn't go after the most valuable items, another would suggest the thieves got what they wanted - comparison competitive data, so that a competitor could gauge their progress and how good the results were, so that they would know how to respond in their own future product offerings. Would a competitor be so bold? I would hope in this day and age not, but there are tens of millions of dollars at stake here, if not hundreds long term. Careers are in trouble. What if some hired third party sent to get info got overzealous, or o'erstepped the intended bounds of effort? Of course, perhaps the valuable items not stolen were kept offsite or secured somewhere, I dunno. Again, this is all uninfromed conjecture, I honestly don't know any more than I've read on the boards. But it sure is a weird thing to happen, and I'll bet Red never leaves themselves that vulnerable again.-mikeSource: http://www.hdforindies.com/2006/09/red-news-macbeth-chart-tests-iso.htmlhttp://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/44629

Jens Dresling has been a news photographer every working day of his life. He sold his first picture when he was 15, to his tiny hometown newspaper in Elsinore, Denmark, the same town where, centuries earlier, another young man, called Hamlet, had some family troubles. But even after 25 years in the business, Dresling, today a staffer at the daily broadsheet Politiken, remains committed to making good pictures.
