So-called "image spam" is on the rise once again -- as clever hackers try to sneak by spam screening software that tests messages for spam based on keywords.After declining steadily throughout 2005 -- from about 12 percent ofall spam at the beginning of the year, down to about 5 percent inNovember -- the use of image spam jumped dramatically in December 2005,to 25 percent of all spam. It has remained at that level fairlyconsistently for the last six months, according to Postini, a messagingmanagement company based in San Carlos, Calif.To be sure, up-to-date spam filters, like the patented PTIN technology,can detect and block image spam based on other attributes of thesending computer, message envelope and headers.There are other, emerging threats too -- like VoIP spam scams.Scammers pretending to be banks e-mail people and ask them to dial atelephone number, then enter the personal information needed to gainaccess to their finances. These fake VoIP services are reducing thecosts associated with conducting such attacks, providing theperpetrators with a lower risk of discovery."Postini attributes this increase to spammerstesting the deliverability of image spam in early 2005 and realizingthat many older spam filters are helpless when messages contain text toanalyze, so the use of images helps get their spam delivered," saidPostini spokesperson Catherine Leahy. Microsoft Research has embarked on a new project to automatically seek out search engine spam before it can be used to defraud advertisers on MSN, Yahoo and Google. Called Strider Search Defender, the tool combines two other projects from MSR: Strider Honey Monkey and URL Tracer.The effort is being headed up by researcher Yi-Min Wang and focuses on a major problem now plaguing the Web: blog spam. The basic premise of Strider Search Defender is that spammers utilize what Yi-Min calls "doorway pages" -- sites at reputable hosts and blog services. The doorway pages pull ads from a "target page" operated by the spammer.Instead of reading the actual content of a page to see if it could be classified as spam, Microsoft is taking a context-based approach that analyzes URL redirection. Because many Web sites will use redirection to serve up different pages to search engines and humans, this methodology could prove more effective.In addition, Yi-Min notes that large-scale spammers create hundreds or thousands of doorway pages the either redirect to or retrieve ads from a single domain. By finding these target pages that are connected to a large number of doorways, an entire spam operation can be stopped in a single pass. In particular, it tests a spam immune system against the publicly available SpamAssassin corpus of spam and non-spam. It does so by classifying email messages with the detectors produced by the immune system. The resulting system classifies the messages with accuracy similar to that of other spam filters, but it does so with fewer detectors."

The study was done by CipherTrust and shows that porn spam is 280 times more effective than spam advertising pharmacy drugs. Paul Judge offered the following towards an explanation: 'If you look at some of the oldest and most successful forms of business on earth, they revolve around sex.'"

DEN HAAG - Het is met ingang van oktober dit jaar verboden om spam, ongevraagde e-mail met veelal reclameboodschappen, te versturen naar bedrijven. Spam aan personen was in Nederland al verboden. Door het nieuwe verbod is nu ook spam aan rechtspersonen verboden en ontstaat een algeheel spamverbod in Nederland. Dit heeft het ministerie van Economische Zaken zondag bekendgemaakt.Hiermee moet de schade die spam veroorzaakt bij internetproviders en andere bedrijven afnemen. Telecom-waakhond Opta kan Nederlandse bedrijven die toch doorgaan met het versturen van spam boetes opleggen, die kunnen oplopen tot 450.000 euro.Staatssecretaris Frank Heemskerk (Economische Zaken) wil hiermee niet alleen overlast tegengaan, maar ook criminaliteit. Spam wordt ook ingezet om stiekem persoonlijke gegevens te achterhalen in computers.

Bedrijven sturen laatste 'legale spam'

AMSTERDAM – Er wordt massaal ‘legale spam’ verstuurd naar Nederlandse bedrijven. In aanloop naar het algehele spamverbod, dat op 1 oktober van kracht gaat, is het aantal verzonden berichten in drie maanden aan info@-adressen met bijna veertig procent gestegen. Dat meldt Tweakers.net woensdag.Een spamverbod voor consumenten bestond al langer, maar vanaf 1 oktober is het volgens de Nederlandse telecomwet ook niet langer toegestaan om ongevraagde mails aan zakelijke mailadressen te sturen. Dat betekent dat bedrijven geen commerciële mails meer mogen versturen zonder nadrukkelijke toestemming van de ontvanger. Toestemming Nu lijken bedrijven hun kans te grijpen om nog eenmaal legaal te kunnen spammen. Ze wijzen in berichten specifiek op de nieuwe wetgeving en verzoeken de ontvanger om toestemming te verlenen, zodat ze kunnen worden opgenomen in het mailbestand.Daarbij worden er bedrijven benaderd die niet op de oorspronkelijke mailinglijst stonden. Dat betekent dat bedrijven mails sturen naar willekeurige info@-adressen, in de hoop dat er zoveel mogelijk bedrijven geronseld worden.

Eerste boete voor spam via Hyves

AMSTERDAM - Telecomwaakhond Opta heeft boetes van in totaal twaalfduizend euro opgelegd aan een spammer die ongewenste reclame maakte via vriendensite Hyves. © NU.nl/Chris Heijmans De spammer, wiens identiteit de Opta niet bekendmaakt, verstuurde volgens de toezichthouder in twee weken ruim 3,2 miljoen 'krabbels' aan gebruikers van Hyves. Daarin werd reclame gemaakt voor een online maffiaspel. De afzender maakte gebruik van software die de reclame automatisch naar willekeurige Hyvers stuurde.Hyves nam naar aanleiding van klachten van gebruikers contact op met de Opta. De vriendensite verzamelde zo'n 1300 meldingen over de spam. De toezichthouder deed daarop een inval bij de vermoedelijke afzender. Voor het eerst Het is voor het eerst dat de Opta spam op een sociale netwerksite bestraft. De toezichthouder kondigde begin dit jaar aan zich in 2009 meer te willen richten op ongewenste reclame via diensten als Hyves, MySpace of Facebook.Het optreden van de Opta tegen spam via e-mail en sms geldt als succcesvol. De toezichthouder kreeg al meermalen complimenten van de Europese Commissie voor de effectieve aanpak van ongewenste reclame. Medewerking Voor de aanpak van spam op sociale netwerken heeft de Opta de medewerking van de sites nodig. Anders dan bij e-mail is de herkomst van ongewenste 'krabbels' niet te achterhalen zonder technische informatie van Hyves, en de Opta is alleen bevoegd om op te treden tegen Nederlandse spam.De boete is nog niet definitief. De vermeende spammer kan bezwaar aantekenen, en daarna nog in beroep gaan. Maatregelen Oprichter Raymond Spanjar van Hyves zegt dat de spamcampagne, die zich overigens al twee jaar geleden voordeed, een uitzondering is. "We hebben mede naar aanleiding van deze spam technische maatregelen getroffen die dit soort dingen moeten voorkomen."De spammer maakte steeds nieuwe accounts aan om zijn reclame te verspreiden. Hyves stelt nu onder meer beperkingen aan het aantal krabbels aan niet-vrienden dat nieuwe Hyvers kunnen versturen.
