Zdziarski also goes on to say that all data on the iPhone — including deleted data — is automatically decrypted by the iPhone when it's copied, allowing hackers and law enforcement agencies alike access the device's raw disk as if no encryption were present. A second demonstration features the recovery of the iPhone's entire disk while the device is still passcode-locked. According to a similar article in Ars Technica, Zdziarski describes the iPhone's hardware encryption by saying it's 'like putting privacy glass on half your shower door.' Named "purplera1n," the tool will only allow installation of unauthorized applications instead of a full unlock. "The purplera1n jailbreak will free your iPhone from the limitations imposed on it by AT&T and Apple. After jailbreaking, a user will be able to customize the iPhone with home-screen wallpapers and third-party ringtones. Better, faster, stronger. Maar aan het uiterlijk is niets veranderd. TomTom was van de partij. Na twee uur kwam dan eindelijk de nieuwe iPhone aan bod in Phil Schillers presentatie tijdens de Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2009 in San Francisco. Hij draagt de naam iPhone 3G S. De S staat voor speed. Het uiterlijk is gelijk aan het iPhone 3G model. Geen rubberen rug dus. Onder de motorkap is wel flink verspijkerd. Zo is de 3G S twee keer sneller dan de 3G. Is de batterijduur opgekrikt. Heeft de camera eindelijk 3 megapixels. Kun je met de camera ook video-opnamen maken. En zit er een digitaal kompas in, die je in Google Maps bijvoorbeeld laat zien in welke richting je kijkt. De betere batterij en camera zijn de grootste pluspunten. De camera was een verplicht nummer. Apple had zich niet kunnen veroorloven verder achter te raken op de concurrentie waarbij 5 megapixels eerder regel dan uitzondering is. (Aan 3 megapixels heb je trouwens doorgaans voldoende op een telefoon, potentiėle verbetering van foto's zit 'm eerder in de grootte van de beeldsensor.) Hetzelfde geldt eigenlijk voor de mogelijkheid om met de camera video op te nemen. De batterij van 3G S is wel winst en belooft 9 uur internetten. Dat zou prettig zijn. De iPhone 3G S is 26 juni verkrijgbaar in Nederland bij T-Mobile, prijzen worden later bekend gemaakt. In de VS, Canada en zes andere Europese landen is de 3G S op 19 juni verkrijgbaar. Er is een 16 gb model voor $199, het 32 gb model gaat $299 kosten. Opvallend: de 'oude' iPhone 3G blijft in het assortiment. Het 8 gb model gaat in de VS slechts $99 dollar kosten. Dit om de brede onderkant van de markt te bedienen. De rest van de iPhone-upgrade zit in het besturingssysteem: iPhone 3.0. Het soft keyboard kan dadelijk ook in landscape-modus gebruikt worden. Cut-paste-copy wordt mogelijk, evenals appeltje-Z, streaming video en audio ontvangen in de browser, en MMS-berichten versturen. Meest praktische is de mogelijkheid je iPhone te gebruiken als modem voor je laptop. Dit zogeheten thetering kan via usb of draadloos via bluetooth en wordt standaard door de iPhone software ondersteund. Scheelt je weer een dongle. Mits de operator meewerkt, maar T-Mobile zit er gelukkig tussen. iPhone 3.0 is 17 juni aanstaande gratis te downloaden voor alle iPhone-gebruikers. (iPod Touch gebruikers betalen acht euro.) En dan de apps, het succesnummer van de iPhone dat zelfs muziek overschaduwd. Ruim 50 duizend apps zijn inmiddels beschikbaar in de App Store van Apple, een aantal dat het aanbod van de concurrentie (Google, Nokia, Blackberry, Palm) ver overstijgt. Tijdens de presentatie passeerden diverse apps de revu. De meest opvallende was van TomTom. We wisten al dat het Nederlandse navigatiebedrijf een iPhone app klaar had liggen. Die gaat er nu eindelijk komen en precies zoals we gewend zijn van TomTom: turn-by-turn navigatie. TomTom brengt ook een speciale iPhone car kit uit met een houder die de GPS-ontvangst versterkt en je iPhone oplaadt. De prijzen en releasedatum van de app en de kit worden nog bekend gemaakt. Er was nog meer nieuws, waarvan hier de hoogtepunten: Safari :: Per direct is versie 4 beschikbaar voor Macintosh en Windows computers. Snow Leopard :: Apple's nieuwe versie van het Mac OS besturingssysteem heeft een tuningbeurt gekregen. De nadruk lag meer op prestatieverbetering dan op nieuwe features. Om een idee te geven: de eerste back-up met Time Machine duurt de helft van de tijd. Opvallend is ook dat het besturingssysteem in omvang is geslonken ten opzichte van zijn voorganger, een unicum in computerland. Snow Leopard is in september verkijgbaar. De Nederlandse prijs volgt nog, maar zal niet heel veel meer zijn dan een jaarabonnement op Bright magazine ;) MacBook :: De 13-inch aluminium MacBook wordt ook een Pro model (de witte MacBook blijft bestaan) en krijgt net als het 15-inch model de krachtigere batterij uit het 17-inch model. Deze batterij is echter niet wisselbaar. Ook nieuw, voor Apple althans, is een SD-kaart slot. De prijzen blijven dezelfde. Behalve die van de MacBook Air. Ik was eerder niet zo enthousiast over deze ultraportable, maar ik ben inmiddels helemaal om en verheugd om te zien dat de prijs maar liefst 400 euro is gezakt. It reminds us of that "OM" series of film SLRs we had years ago, which packed a lot of big features into its small size.
