According to officials from both companies, the final version of the site is slated to premiere within several months, though an exact date has not been set. Users can sign up for a private beta on the homepage. Hulu will offer free viewing of full-length films and TV episodes, supported by advertising, from the aforementioned two companies as well as from Sony Corp. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. "Consumers identify with shows and films," rather than networks, Hulu chief executive Jason Kilar said. "When you aggregate great content together, it makes things easier for the user." SVP/GM David Payne borrows a line from the Staples ad campaign: "If there were an 'easy button' for news, this is what you'd expect." Not so sure about that but it is easier to navigate. Video: All video on the site is free now, with CNN touting the Turner Media Player as the "largest Flash video player of its kind." Some of the user comments raise a different issue about video--not everyone wants it and some seem to go online to avoid video news. One user suggests no standalone video without an accompanying story. Other people are running into problems seeing Flash at work or having video blocked because of their ad blockers. At last check, there were four live video streams but not in multiview. As expected with the recent investment in IBS, more local news. One funny note read "I'm guessing it's designed to be iPhone friendly." Actually, I tried viewing the site via iPhone and couldn't get it to load at all until I was on WiFi; my other edge-speed device loaded the mobile version of the page quickly. The full site, including video, works well so far using a 3G card but users with slower speeds but non-broadband users are having problems; no obvious low-speed options. Looking it over: A few notes after another look-through: -- It is a less-dense site with more white space. This release is build 106.Nicole at the Windows Live Messenger blog gives a great overview of what’s new in this version, some of the main changes are:Roaming identities allow you to keep the same PSM and display picture regardless of where you sign in.Contact cards have been revamped with a new look.Emoticons, winks, backgrounds DP menus also have a new look.The Windows Live Ideas page also lists better server performance, automatic updates and improved sign-in performance. Although just about each version has claimed better sign-in performance, each version seems to create more sign-in problems for users. In addition to the new Yahoo Finance site that launches later today, Yahoo is finally taking its new home page, previously in beta at yahoo.com/preview, live on the main yahoo.com site. The launch is U.S. only, other markets will follow shortly.We’ve all know this was coming for some time. Yahoo began testing the new home page with some users back in February. In May, Yahoo made the new page available to everyone at the yahoo.com/preview domain linked to above.The new home page has a significantly different layout than the current look, as well as some Ajax integration, DHTML and more personalization features. Other new features are discussed in a Yahoo blog post discussing the new home page on May 15, 2006. In that post, they call it “the most significant redesign of the www.yahoo.com home page ever”. Given that Yahoo is the larget site on the Internet (despite recent gains by Myspace), their embrace of new web technologies is an important evolution.
