Cheating Via the Internet at College

Electron Barrage writes, "An anonymous professor writes that last year about half of the seniors at his US university were suspected of cheating, mostly due to the Internet and community sites such as Wikipedia. He guesses that perhaps 25%-30% were actually guilty, a huge increase from earlier levels. According to this professor, it's nearly impossible for the universities to keep up with the new forms of cheating enabled by the Net. Will academic institutions learn to deal with this new reality? It sounds a little dubious from this professor's viewpoint." The article mentions the anti-cheating services Turn It In and iThenticate (while decrying their expense), but expresses worry over the new countermeasure represented by Student of Fortune.

Accusations of cheating at the largest tournament of the year have the chess world buzzing - and have tournament directors worried about what they may have to do to stop players from trying to cheat in the future. The suspected cheating occurred at the World Open in Philadelphia over the July 4 weekend and involved two players in two sections of the tournament. In each case, the player was suspected of receiving help from computers or from accomplices using computers. Neither player was caught cheating, but one player, Steve Rosenberg, was expelled. The other, Eugene Varshavsky, was allowed to finish the tournament but was searched before each round, then watched closely during games.

Google Search Cheat Sheet

Does anyone else think Google search is going down the tube? When I do a search for anything these days, I get alot of crap in the top searches. I was actually thinking about learning some tricks to refine my search terms, and I found this useful Cheat Sheet. Using the command "safesearch:" before your search term helps you exclude adult-oriented content. Or how about "date:" which lets you search for content within the past 3, 6 or 12 months? That should come in handy in searches. Go over the cheat sheet and find out how you can improve your search results. Any got any other tips?Source: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TechieDivasGuideToGadgets/~3/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.techiediva.com%2Fweblog%2F2006%2F07%2Fgoogle_search_c.html Techie Diva

corbettw writes "According to a wire report on Yahoo! news, competition for university admissions in China are so intense that people are coming up with new, and sometimes dangerous, ways to cheat. The methods include microscopic earphones and wireless devices. In some cases, students are required surgery to recover from their cheating attempts. If there are that many people that desperate to get into a university, the obvious question would be, why don't they just open more schools?"
