Xbox-Scene got a tip about the new Xbox 360 board supporting HDMI. The parolees at Kotaku don't believe it, citing Xbox-Scene forum posters and their "apeshit" denial over the eventual obscolescence of their first-run Xbox 360s. We, on the other hand, aren't so sure. If the 360 were to someday get an eventual HD DVD drive—we're not saying anytime soon—then an internal HDMI port would definitely make sense. As HD DVD hardware prices fall over the years, wouldn't it make sense not to ship two drives with one box? So if B follows A, and A is true, what do you have? The other day, Bumbeck said to us, "Man, I may as well just go back to smoking," in reference to the air quality in LA. He's up in the hills, while we're at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We're also three blocks from the Port of Los Angeles, which, combined with the Port of Long Beach, create the busiest port facility in the US, and the fourth-largest in the world. What's more the ports handle a mind-boggling 40% of the cargo to enter the United States each year. And due to the ships' massive two-stroke diesels burning high-sulfur fuel and the aging fleet of short-haul trucks used to ferry cargo from berths to railcars, it's also a source of massive air pollution. Officials have just revealed a plan to change that. Under the plan, each port will contribute $100,000,000 to replace the trucks. Meanwhile, cargo ships will be required to run on low-sulfur fuel within 20 miles of the harbor. The docks will altro be retrofitted, at customer expense, to allow freighters to run on electrical power while dockside, instead of keeping the stanky diesels idling. One interesting sticking point that's hung in the craw of environmental groups: apparently, it isn't clear whether the rules will also apply to cruise ships and tankers. To finance the trucks, port officials are floating a bond measure in September, noting that the funding will have to come from other places if CARB doesn't approve all of the bond money they need. Dear CARB. Stop picking on classic-car lovers and do something about the ports. We're willing to bet you that they pollute more in a day than every over-30 classic still on the road in California combined does. Although we've seen these floating around in the wild, SapphireTech has now officially announced the availability of its Sapphire Radeon X1600Pro graphics card. What's so unusual about it? Well, well, looky there—it's an HDMI port on its business end instead of the usual DVI. The 256MB card has SP/DIF coaxial digital audio, too, and the digital audio can also be passed through that HDMI port. Competitor nVidia told us graphics cards like this were coming, but this is the first we've seen with such a port, well-suited for home theater use because it's HDCP (High bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) compliant. MADRID - De politie in Portugal heeft bijna 1500 kilo explosieven gevonden in de garage van een huis dat werd gehuurd door vermoedelijke leden van de Baskische afscheidingsbeweging ETA. © ANP Dat heeft het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken in buurland Spanje zaterdag laten weten.De Portugese autoriteiten hadden vrijdag melding gemaakt van de vondst van het ETA-depot in Casal da Averela, vlakbij de in het midden van het land gelegen stad Obidos. Er werd toen gesproken over de opslagplaats van een terroristische organisatie zonder een specifieke groep te noemen. Maar de Spaanse autoriteiten spraken zaterdag over ''een woning gebruikt door de terroristische groep ETA''. Computers De politie in Portugal trof in de garage 1330 kilo ammoniumnitraat, 75 kilo kaliumnitraat, 40 liter zwavelzuur en andere springstoffen aan. Ook zijn verscheidene computers in de woning in beslag genomen. Door de informatie in de computers zijn twee vermoedelijke ETA-terroristen geïdentificeerd en is hun signalement verspreid.De twee zouden het appartement onlangs hebben gehuurd. De politie ging poolshoogte in het pand nemen op advies van de buren. Die vertrouwden het zaakje niet, omdat de Spaans sprekende mannen in alle haast het pand zouden hebben verlaten. Vals kenteken Enkele dagen eerder was in Obidos een bestelbusje met een vals kenteken ontdekt met daarin onstekingsmechanismen die doorgaans door de ETA wordt gebruikt.De Spaanse autoriteiten vermoeden al langer dat de ETA vanuit Portugal aanslagen in Spanje voorbereidt. In Frankrijk kan de terreurbeweging steeds moeilijker opereren. De Franse politie heeft in de afgelopen jaren tal van personen opgepakt die worden verdacht van betrokkenheid bij de ETA.

A1 weer open na ongeval kalverentransport

RIJSSEN - De snelweg A1, die enkele uren gesloten was wegens loslopende kalveren, is sinds half elf weer open. Dat heeft de politie dinsdag gemeld. De 35 kalveren waren afkomstig van een veewagen die rond zeven uur dinsdagochtend in brand was gevlogen. De beesten wisten op tijd aan het vuur te ontsnappen. Volgens de brandweer raakten er wel twee kalveren gewond. De chauffeur bleef ongedeerd. Er moest eerst vervangend vervoer voor de kalveren worden geregeld voordat de weg kon worden vrijgegeven.

Actievoerders op ijsschotsen blokkeren kolenimport

ROTTERDAM - Verkleed als premier Jan Peter Balkenende en bovenop ijsblokken blokkeren actievoerders van Greenpeace zaterdag de kolenimport in de Rotterdamse haven. Greenpeace blokkeert kolenimport slideshow De drie 'Balkenendes' protesteren samen met ongeveer veertig niet-vermomde actievoerders tegen het gebruik van kolen. Dat heeft Greenpeace zaterdag bekendgemaakt.De actievoerders, balancerend op in totaal zes ijsblokken en varend in zeven rubberbootjes en vier kano's, zijn van plan een kolenschip tegen te houden. Klimaattop Daarmee hoopt Greenpeace de echte premier ervan te overtuigen dat hij zich op de klimaattop in Kopenhagen moet inzetten voor beëindiging van het gebruik van kolen. Volgens de organisatie is het een van de voornaamste oorzaken van CO2-uitstoot.Op het netwerk Hyves deden ruim 150.000 mensen een persoonlijke oproep aan premier Balkenende om een einde te maken aan het kolengebruik. Ook bekende Nederlanders als dj Ruud de Wild, presentatrice Floortje Dessing en zanger Alain Clark ondersteunen de actie.Twee kolenschepen die probeerden de haven te bereiken, moesten zaterdag wegens de blokkade terugkeren naar zee. Dat zei een woordvoerder van het havenbedrijf Rotterdam. Volgens de zegsman wachten de boten nu op zee tot de blokkade is opgeheven.
