Alles over Maplin Car DVD Player: Craptastic | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2006-08-18 19:31:23
Crap, crap, crappity crap. The Maplin Car DVD Player is absolute crap! Why we are featuring it on Giz this morning still boggles my mind, but here we go! Weeee!
This is an in-car DVD player made by Maplin. See that small, 2.5-inch screen on the unit in the picture above? No, that isn't a control screen where you can select options for an additional DVD-playing LCD, that is the DVD playback screen. Two-point-five inches of LCD goodness. I can't even handle watching movies on an iPod, my mind would surely implode into itself trying to catch a flick on this thing. It supports other types of media including VCD/MP3/CD/CD-R etc. It doesn't matter how much this costs because no one will buy it, and if you do, your head deserves to implode on itself. – Travis Hudson

Alles over Sony MEX-BT5000 Car Stereo Head-Unit With Bluetooth | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2006-07-19 23:25:57
This Sony receiver functions as both a standard AM/FM CD head unit and as a hands-free "headset" for your Bluetooth enabled phone—very convenient when both of your hands are already busy shaving and making sexually explicit gestures to little old lady in the next car.
The MEX-BT5000 holds 50 phonebook entries—not 5000 as the name would have you beleive—and displays the contact information on the receiver so you don't have to fumble for your phone. You can also take your A2DP enabled music player and stream MP3/WMA/ATRAC to the device. Ah, ATRAC. It wouldn't be a Sony device without it. – Jason Chen

Alles over Formula One Reboot: Microsoft To Supply Racing Electronic Control Units | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Jalopnik | 2006-07-06 05:30:54
The big news from the racing front today for most fans was the selection of Bridgestone as the exclusive tire supplier for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons of Formula One racing. The selection came after Michelin's opposition to a single tire supplier and its subsequent withdrawal from F1 racing at the end of the year. But some of us who have a geekier older brother (still geekier even with an all-new look) -- know the big news is the decision by the World Motor Sport Council to make Microsoft the official supplier of electronic control units (ECUs). The control units are designed to regulate and manage the engine and ensure the ban on traction control is followed by sometimes-naughty mechanics. Hmm...sounds like a good plan -- until Schumacher goes into a wall because his engine gets a blue screen of death.

Alles over Samsungs Backpedals on Combo HD DVD/Blu-ray Player | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2006-06-23 20:33:39
Despite Samsung middle manager Kim Du-Hyon speaking out on Tuesday about how the company is considering a universal player, now Samsung appears to be backpedaling away from embracing the idea of a high-definition disk player that will handle both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. In a terse, two-sentence statement to the press, Samsung beat a hasty, yet subtle retreat:
"Samsung Electronics is fully committed to the Blu-ray format and currently only has plans to introduce a Blu-ray player to the market. Samsung is looking forward to a very successful launch of the BD-P1000 which will be available on retail shelves, June 25th for a $999 MAP price in the United States."Notice the word "only" in there, suggesting that Samsung might be a bit jittery about placing its flag over on the HD DVD side, even if it was just evidenced by an offhand remark uttered by a middle manager.
Will there still be universal players? There's still LG which publicly announced it would manufacture a player that goes both ways, and those in the know are saying other companies are sniffing around the possibility, too. We're thinking it's inevitable. – Charlie White

Alles over Samsung's Combo HD DVD/Blu-ray Player? | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2006-06-21 22:09:47
LG was the first to publicly announce it would manufacture a universal player capable of displaying both HD DVD and Blu-ray content, and now on the eve of launching the BD-P1000, the first Blu-ray player to go on sale in the United States, Samsung said yesterday that it's also working on a combination Blu-ray and HD DVD drive. Kim Du-Hyon, an assistant manager at Samsung's product planning division told reporters that the company is confident the Blu-ray format will prevail over HD DVD, but indicated the company would be willing to hedge its bets if HD DVD proves to be more popular than anticipated:"We don't have a plan to make an HD DVD-only player but are considering a universal player. We are preparing HD DVD [support] now and if we launch a universal player it will be the end of this year or early next year."According to insiders, LG and Samsung are not the only companies thinking about manufacturing a combination player. Looks like this is going to be similar to the DVD+R/DVD-R conundrum, where both ended up occupying space in most DVD burners. That's the best reason yet to wait before buying into any of these two overpriced and underperforming HD disc formats. – Charlie White
