Microwave Experiments Cause Sponge Disasters

gollum123 writes "Reports about a study that found microwave ovens can be used to sterilize kitchen sponges sent people hurrying to test the idea this week — with sometimes disastrous results. A team at the University of Florida found that two minutes in the microwave at full power could kill a range of bacteria, viruses and parasites on kitchen sponges. They described how they soaked the sponges in wastewater and then zapped them. But several experimenters evidently left out the crucial step of wetting the sponge. "Just wanted you to know that your article on microwaving sponges and scrubbers aroused my interest. However, when I put my sponge/scrubber into the microwave, it caught fire, smoked up the house, ruined my microwave, and pissed me off," one correspondent wrote in an e-mail to Reuters."

Daewoo Two-Door Microwave

This is the latest kitchen gadget from Daewoo. It is a microwave that has both a front door and back door. It goes both ways ... like a bisexual (sorry, had to fit that Family Guy joke in somewhere). This is probably best used in kitchens that have middle islands or barriers that can be accessed from both sides. It is a pretty simple idea that will likely make a ton just because it is innovative and caters to the lazy. This two-door microwave should be available later this year. – Travis Hudson Daewoo Unveils Two-Door Microwave [GadgetInsight]

Here's a nice little piece of concept art that's both functional and pleasing to the eye, which is a bit of a rarity. Dubbed the Microwave Vase by designer Woo Seokmoon, it's a combination microwave and vase that's supposedly going to be all the rage with those young urban professionals out there. In its default setting, the Microwave Vase looks like nothing more than a regular vase; once food is placed inside and the top knob is adjusted for time, then it becomes an actual microwave, cooking your food in a heartbeat. When the food is finished, the little green leaf on top lights up to let you know that your meal is ready. Wasn't this an accessory in the The Sims? (Hint: Check inside to see what it looks like as just an everyday vase.) I like it. My apartment is so tiny that it's difficult to simultaneously fit three fully grown adults inside it. Now I can save a precious extra six inches of space. Rock on, Woo, rock on. Now whether or not it'll actually see the light of day is another matter entirely. – Nicholas Deleon Microwave Vase [Yanko Design]

The Montgomery County coroner's office has reason to believe and scientific evidence to support that a microwave oven might have been involved in the death of this child. (AP Photo/Montgomery County Sheriff's Office)" border="0" />AP - A mother was arrested on suspicion of murdering her newborn daughter by microwaving the baby in an oven. China Arnold, 26, was jailed Monday on a charge of aggravated murder, more than a year after she brought her dead month-old baby to a hospital. Bail was set Tuesday at $1 million.

Everyday Objects Placed in a Microwave

Tom writes "Everyday objects can produce interesting effects when you stick them in a standard microwave. Grapes spark, matches create superheated plasma fireballs, mini lightning-bolts arc between sheets of aluminum foil, and soap both splits open and puffs up, creating a somewhat vulgar spurt of bubbly excrement that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. However, as cool as microwave experimentation can be, balls of plasma and the like are bad for both your eyes and your microwave, so it's probably best not to try these things at home.

Vicissidude writes "A team of American and British researchers has made a cloak of invisibility. In their experiment the scientists used microwaves to try and detect a copper cylinder. Like light and radar waves, microwaves bounce off objects making them visible and creating a shadow, though it has to be detected with instruments. If you can hide something from microwaves, you can hide it from radar and visible light. In effect the device, made of metamaterials — engineered mixtures of metal and circuit board materials, which could include ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite materials — channels the microwaves around the object being hidden. When water flows around a rock, co-author David R. Smith explained, the water recombines after it passes the rock and people looking at the water downstream would never know it had passed a rock. The first working cloak was in only two dimensions and did cast a small shadow, Smith acknowledged. The next step is to go for three dimensions and to eliminate any shadow."

If youd prefer to maximize your couch time even more by not even mashing buttons on the face of your microwave, Daewoos new device hears you loud and clear. Sporting a countertop design (as opposed to the in-a-drawer variety), brushed aluminum finish, and ironically enough, a full-fledged keypad, the voice recognition microwave recalls up to 40 cooking commands to get things fired up with just a shout. Niceties include its ability to react to anyones voice (not just the programmer) as well as automatically determining the time required to properly heat / cook your food. Daewoo announced its voice-activated microwave oven, a good listener in the kitchen which understands anyone who talks to it. That is, as long as you tell it one of its 40 voice commands it's able to recognize. You just tell it what you'd like to cook, and it goes on its merry way, nuking it with 95% accuracy. Seems like it would be fun to talk to your oven for the first day or two, but really, how hard is it to push a couple of buttons? No pricing was announced, but the company says it will be available sometime in 2007. – Charlie White Daewoo Unveils Voice Recognition Microwave [ [BornRich]

The GEs interactive Kitchen of the Future is still a concept, but the interactive technology is no more just a concept with Daewoo taking the lead with its Voice Recognition Microwave. The voice-activated microwave oven stores up to 40 voice commands and will respond to anyone who talks to it. The speech-activated microwave starts working, as soon as you tell it what you want to cook. The oven will then automatically start with the correct time and the temperature for your selection. dfenstrate writes "The latest New Scientist has an article about an engine that exploits relativity and microwaves to generate thrust. There is a working prototype." From the article: "Roger Shawyer has developed an engine with no moving parts that he believes can replace rockets and make trains, planes and automobiles obsolete ... The device that has sparked their interest is an engine that generates thrust purely from electromagnetic radiation — microwaves to be precise — by exploiting the strange properties of relativity. It has no moving parts, and releases no exhaust or noxious emissions. Potentially, it could pack the punch of a rocket in a box the size of a suitcase. It could one day replace the engines on almost any spacecraft. More advanced versions might allow cars to lift from the ground and hover."

Filed under: Misc. GadgetsIf any of our peeps at Tel Aviv University have been noticing some suspicious holes around the campus lately, heres your culprit. It seems some researchers at the university have created a microwave drill that can easily bore holes through concrete, glass and other materials without leaving so much as a trace of dust left behind. It works by heating up the material to a toasty 2,000 degrees Celsius (over 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit), which softens the material enough for a metal rod to be pushed through it. Like any good death ray, however, the microwave drill has its weaknesses. For starters, the beam is unable to penetrate steel or sapphire, and theres also the small issue of microwave radiation, which could have some nasty consequences for the poor soul stuck operating the drill. According to the researchers, however, a simple shielding plate should be enough to protect [&]Source: http://www.gigabeat.co.uk/blog/08/23/2006/death-ray/researchers-create-microwave-drilldeath-ray

Yes, this is the truth. Researchers at Tel Aviv University have found a way to use a technology that I am very fond of to make concrete drilling a bit easier and less messy. Microwaves are used to heat the concrete or other material to well over 2,000 degrees celcius making it quite a bit easier to drill through. This prevents any kind of dust debris while drilling and also allows for a hot pocket to get cooked thoroughly while on the job. – Travis Hudson Microwave-Drill Technology [Via SCI FI]

Just think of all of the Duran Duran you could listen to while heating up your nightly microwave dinner, by yourself, of course. The microwave combo retails for $59.99, which isn't too terribly bad, but the online store is currently out of stock.
