Alles over Linux Foundation Purchases Linux.com | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-03-04 08:46:08
darthcamaro and several other readers have noted that the Linux Foundation has bought Linux.com from Sourceforge Inc. (Slashdot's corporate parent). The Linux Foundation (employer of Linus Torvalds) will take over the editorial and community stewardship for the site; Sourceforge will continue to supply advertising on it. "[Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim] Zemlin says the Linux Foundation wants to build a collaborative forum where Linux users can share ideas and get information on the Linux operating system. A beta of the site will be released in the next few months. ... Linux.com is being redesigned as a central source for Linux software, documentation and answers regardless of platforms, including server, desktop/netbook, mobile and embedded areas." What do you think should be on Linux.com?Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Salasaga Fills Flash Creation Hole for Linux | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2008-03-24 22:58:30
Linux.com's Bruce Byfield is reporting that Salasaga, the renamed Flame Project, is attempting to fill the functionality gap of Flash creation for Linux in addition to being a cross-platform tool. While it still lacks the spit-shine of more mature apps, it is going a long way to filling yet another hole in Linux software. "Opening Salasaga, you could easily think you are in a slide show program. Individual slides display on the left, and the current slide appears on the bottom right. On the top right is information about the layers on the current side. Menus are logically laid out across the top of the editing window. From the editing menu, you can set the defaults for new projects, including the default display size of finished projects, the preview width, and the default background color. After adjusting these settings, you proceed logically from the right as you develop a project, progressing from Screenshots for importation through Slide and Layer to Export. This progression is so logical that few viewers should have trouble teaching themselves the basics of the software and producing a test project in less than 20 minutes -- and saving it in native .flame format or exporting it to Flash or SVG formats."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Jeos: Canonical's Virtualisation-Specific Ubuntu Linux | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2007-09-14 23:01:26
"Ubuntu sponsor Canonical announced a version of its Linux software stripped down for use just on virtualized environments. The version, called Jeos for 'Just Enough Operating System' and pronounced 'juice', is now available." That's what ZDnet and News.com report, but Jeos is nowhere to be found on the Ubuntu website. El Reg claims: "Canonical is still in the midst of deciding whether not to make JeOS wildly available, since it's mostly meant as an ISV thing." http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=18614
Alles over New Facts: Google Phone Prototypes, Software, Project Costing Hundreds of Millions of Dollars | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2007-08-03 05:26:20
Valleywag realizes that Google will not likely do phone hardware themselves. Whatever. As long as it supports the software, hopefully some shiny Mobile Google OS, we're interested. Either way, this is what the WSJ and Reuters said today:
•"Now it is drafting specifications for phones that can display all of Google's mobile applications at their best, and it is developing new software to run on them. The company is conducting much of the development work at a facility in Boston, and is working on a sophisticated new Web browser for cellphones."
•Google has invested hundreds of millions on the project.
•Google has also developed prototype phones, with partners like LG Electronics.• "ads in the mobile phone is that they are twice as profitable or more than the nonmobile phone ads because they're more personal" says Eric Schmidt (from AllthingsD)
•In Europe, T-Mobile and Orange are believed to be partners. Verizon rejected their plans in the US because they wanted to share ad revenue.
•Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008
Regardless of the reputations of both the WSJ and Reuters, take all of this with a grain of salt.
