Alles over Linux Games For Non-Gamers? | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-10-12 05:17:39
Nethead writes "Due to some down-time, I'm looking for some Linux games to pass the time. I've been playing BattleMaster, a PHP web game but it's only two turns a day, and I'd like something a bit faster. I've not really played PC games since the Doom era so I'm really out of touch here. I don't have a real gamer box, just a simple video card. What do Slashdotters think I should try? A simple FPS or some type of networked game would do. What's out there for Linux?"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over EVO Linux Gaming Console Opens Pre-Orders | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-04-03 23:51:22
Engadget is reporting that Envizions, maker of the EVO Linux game console, has finally announced final specs and opened the doors to pre-orders. All bets are off until users actually see the hardware, but it will be nice to see a new player in the market. Of course, this assumes they put some time into a little polish that is usually expected from the gaming community (that website, yikes) and some effort into a killer game library. "Envizions say that the console will run a modified, quick-boot distro of Fedora called Mirrors (which can be upgraded to a beefier build named Mirrors Evolution X), and will feature a "cloud" service stacked with Amiga (!) games and an Akimbo-based video service. Beyond that, proper titles will be sold online and on SD cards for around $20." I'm sure they won't forget to send Slashdot a beta review copy with a couple of games.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Apricot Team Selected For Fully Open Source 3D Game | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2008-01-01 22:03:14
crush writes "The Linux Game Tome notes that the final team to produce a fully Open Source 3D game using the CrystalSpace engine and Blender has been chosen. The project (known as Apricot) aims to produce a cross-platform, 3D game with completely Free (CCA) graphics, music and code. An important side-effect of the project is to improve open source tools for the professional game development industry." I look forward to more 3D games on my desktop, even if this one won't be the first. (And where is the bus-driving equivalent open-source equivalent to the under-rated FlightGear?)Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Is id Abandoning Linux? | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-09-19 16:30:17
edv writes "In a news posting dated 10th of September, Beyond3D is reporting of an article in a German publication in which id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead discusses the upcoming id title Rage and the engine it runs on, codenamed 'id Tech 5'. Amongst other things Todd mentions that no Linux version of the game is planned at the moment, and that it will run on Direct3D on Windows platform. OpenGL version is planned for the Mac however. If true, this would be a serious blow for Linux gaming (insert jokes here) as id and Carmack have been strong proponents of OpenGL and openness in the past."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over AMD To Open ATI Specs | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-09-06 18:01:13
Several readers tipped us the followup of yesterday's AMD/ATI news, the new development hinted at by Phoronix: AMD has announced they are releasing the specs for all new Radeon chipsets, and will be working with the open source community to develop a fully functional 2D and 3D graphics driver. An anonymous reader opines: "AMD appears to be following in Intel's footsteps with upcoming releases. If AMD is successful NVidia will have real competition in the GNU/Linux gaming arena. While past support by ATI was unsatisfactory the new AMD buyout appears to be having some effect."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over AMD Launches New ATI Linux Driver | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-09-05 17:14:02
Michael Larabel writes "AMD has issued a press release announcing 'significant graphics performance and compatibility enhancements' on Linux. AMD will be delivering new ATI Linux drivers this year that offer ATI Radeon HD 2000 series support, AIGLX support (Beryl and Compiz), and major performance improvements. At Phoronix we have been testing these new drivers internally for the past few weeks and have a number of articles looking at this new driver. The ATI 8.41 Linux driver delivers Linux gaming improvements from the R300/400 series and the R500 series. The inaugural Radeon HD 2900XT series support also can be found in the new ATI Linux driver with 'the best price/performance ratio of any high-end graphics card under Linux.' While this new driver cannot be downloaded yet, in their press release AMD also alludes to accelerating efforts with the open-source community."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Project Aims to Bring DX10 Gaming to XP, Linux, OS X | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2007-04-26 04:15:00
"Last Wednesday, a company called Falling Leaf Systems announced the availability of an alpha of something called the Alky Project. The Alky Project has a lofty goal: to liberate DirectX 10 gaming from the confines of Vista and bring it first to Windows XP, and then to Linux and OS X. The project plans to do this by building a converter that can take in a DX10 game executable and spit out a modified version that can be run on a (non-Vista) target OS. The target OS must be x86-based, which rules out the PPC version of OS X, since the converter doesn't do any binary translation." http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=17766
Alles over Virgin America's Airplanes Play Doom | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2007-02-03 08:40:53
Want even more reason why Virgin America should be approved by the Department of Transportation? Take a look at this video that focuses on the seat-back entertainment on each seat.
The screens are 9-inch and touchscreen, which are powered by an actual individual PC running Linux. These are all interconnected via Ethernet, which grab streaming video off of three file servers in the plane's belly. You can listen to music, watch TV, get pay-per-view movies, or even order food from the touchscreen.
The best part? They ported a bunch of Linux games—including Doom— so you can play it right on the screen. – Jason Chen
