Alles over Monitor a Linux box With Machine Generated Music | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2006-11-15 18:00:24
mcappel writes "Linux and Unix admins are familiar with vmstat and top, which are visual tools displaying the health of a computer. chordStats adds a new interface to a system monitoring setup — information passed through tone, timbre, and harmony. IBM's Nathan Harrington, who wrote Knock Some Commands Into Your Laptop, created a simple Perl script to send note events to FluidSynth that forces various system events to be interpreted as a part of a harmonious interval, and looks at options for enhancing a musical system monitor."

Alles over Speeding up Linux: One Step Further with Pardus | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2006-10-07 04:59:15
"For a long time, Linux has been blamed to boot slowly, compared to other modern operating systems. In this article, we are going to focus on a new init system we developed for our Pardus Linux distribution, Mudur, together with other initiatives that are worth mentioning. Mudur is written from scratch in Python with simplicity, speed and maintainability in mind. It isn't a replacement for the /sbin/init command like some other alternatives, nor just a parallel script executor. Mudur greatly simplified our boot process, making it faster and more flexible. Authors look forward for future boot process research for further improvement and optimizations." http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=16090

Alles over Windows Run commands: 112 ways to command Windows | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Software Headlines :: Index | 2006-09-15 00:03:18
Filed under: Text, Utilities, Windows, Productivity112 Windows commands. I don't know that this is something I would keep handy because I am too lazy to type all that in every time I wanted to run a program, which is why we have icons in this modern world. If you are a Linux/Unix geek, simply like carpal tunnel, or have a penchant for painful memory overruns (in your head) I can see using this. I don't know who put this up, but it looks like a personal cheat sheet that you could print out and reference on occasion if you need to do something special you can't find easily elsewhere on your PC. I like lists of commands, codes, and other jazz. I suppose this is because it is a type of inro pr0n. I like my information overload alright? Don't knock it man, some people like cats. I happen to not be one of them.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | CommentsSource: http://feeds.downloadsquad.com/~r/weblogsinc/downloadsquad/~3/22316803/ Ryan Carter http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/38151
Alles over Review: Gentoo Linux 2006.1 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2006-09-02 11:28:23
Another review of Gentoo 2006.1. In one respect, Gentoo Linux 2006.1 is the same as it's always been, except with newer software on the installation media. Beginning with version 2006.0, though, a graphical environment was added to the live CD along with an installation program that rarely worked properly. The good news is, the installer works reasonably well in Gentoo 2006.1; the bad news is, it's still quicker and easier to install by hand via the command line. http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=15702
Alles over Ubuntu Fouls, Fixes Linux Update | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-08-29 09:27:33
One week after it issued a faulty update to its popular Linux distribution, the Ubuntu project is still the subject of scorn among users of its open source software .The Ubuntu update inadvertently broke users' interface functionality, forcing them into command line mode. Many downplayed the error, as Ubuntu quickly withdrew the update and reissued a proper one. However, some users were decidedly angry with the project's developers for letting such an error slip through. The issue may even cost Ubuntu in its current bid to attract more enterprise users.Ubuntu distributor Canonical blamed the faulty update on a series of errors in the update process that affected some users of Ubuntu 6.06, causing their graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to fail. "An update to the windowing system in Ubuntu was incorrectly released for Ubuntu 6.06 LTS," Canonical said on its Web site. "When applied to Ubuntu 6.06, the patch inadvertently breaks the desktop windowing environment on some systems."When the error was discovered, the group withdrew the patch and disabled mirrors to stop the faulty updates. "We have launched an investigation and formal quality process review to understand exactly how this happened and what corrective actions to take," Canonical said. With recent announcements of enterprise support and functionality with Sun's new Niagara servers, Ubuntu has been trying to take its desktop success to the corporate server, but its latest stumble highlights the difficulties of doing so, said Gartner Vice President George Weiss.Gartner recommends clients limit their choice of Linux to one of the major distributions, such as Red Hat or Novell's Suse Linux. Alles over Flickr uploading on Linux, pt. 1: jUploadr | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Software Headlines :: Index | 2006-08-23 15:05:36
Filed under: Fun, Internet, Photo, Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Open Source, Social SoftwareThis is part 1 of a 4-part series on uploading photos to Flickr from your Linux box. I'm assuming you already know what Flickr is and you have a Flickr account, and now you want to bulk upload photos to Flickr from your Linux box. In my case, I'm using Kubuntu, but the software I cover should work for you regardless of distro. Our first app up to the plate is jUploadr.jUploadr works on Windows, Mac OS X, & Linux, no surprise since it's written in Java, & it's covered under the GPL. Head over to the download page at SourceForge, download the .tar.gz file, and untar it. I'd recommend putting it in your /opt directory, but you can do it where you'd like (remember that I'm running Kubuntu, so I'm using sudo).sudo mv jUploadr-1.0-linuxGTK-i386.tar.gz /opt sudo tar zxvf jUploadr-1.0-linuxGTK-i386.tar.gz sudo mv jUploadr-1.0-linuxGTK-i386 juploadrAt this point, running the app is simple:/opt/juploadr/jUploadrYou can type that on the command line, or create a link to it, or add it to your KDE or GNOME menu, or whatever. When the program runs, it's pretty bare bones.Follow the instructions: just drag 'n drop pix onto the window, & they're added for upload. In just a few moments, you'll have your pix ready to go, as you can see here:(Yup, that's one cute lil' dog. Her name is Libby.)If you want to set Flickr metadata, right-click on an image and choose Edit (which makes it sound like it's going to open in the GIMP, but it doesn't), which opens the Attributes window for that photo. You can make the photo private, add tags (no automation here, unfortunately ... you have to type every single one in by hand), change the title, and add a Description. There's no way to batch-edit a bunch of photos at one time, which means more work. Press OK to close the Attributes window. When you're finished with all your photos, press Upload! and soon enough, your pictures are on Flickr. Here are the Preferences, btw. 1st, you need to authorize jUploadr with Flickr so you can upload using this tool. Just press the button & follow the instructions. 2nd, set default privacy & tags: 3rd, change what happens to uploaded images, & images that are uploaded: 4th, set up your proxy, if you gotta. jUploadr is a good program, in that it works, but it's pretty simple. If you don't really use tags all that much, & you're looking for a program that you can use on multiple machines, then it's good. If you're looking for more features - especially batch editing - then you'll have to wait for further reviews in this series.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | CommentsSource: http://feeds.downloadsquad.com/~r/weblogsinc/downloadsquad/~3/15627367/ Scott Granneman http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/29286
Alles over Ark Linux Review, A Distro with an Identity Crisis | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2006-08-22 11:42:53
mikemuch writes "ExtremeTech has a review of Ark Linux 2006.1, which launched earlier this month. Overall, the reviewer likes this free KDE-based distro, but had to question some implementation choices, such as using the less-compatible Konqueror over Firefox for its default web browser. And for a distro that bills itself as 'a Linux distribution for everyone — designed to be easy to install and learn for users without prior Linux' the installation should hide command-line scrolling and be able to more automatically install standard graphics card drivers."

Alles over Installing Debian GNU/Linux Using debootstrap | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2006-08-21 23:29:28
"Most Debian GNU/Linux neophytes find that distribution's default installer a bit difficult and ugly. While developers are working on a new installer for Debian Etch, there is a fully baked command-line alternative today: debootstrap. Debootstrap creates a basic Debian installation, and can also be used for creating custom, minimal installations on embedded systems or for replacing a pre-installed Linux distribution with Debian on a co-located server." http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=15571
Alles over Simplify Data Extraction Using Linux Text Utilities | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | OSNews | 2006-08-11 02:45:23
Much of Linux system administration involves tediously combing through plain-text configuration files. Fortunately, Linux has a rich array of UNIX-derived data extraction utilities, including head, tail, grep, egrep, fgrep, cut, paste, join, awk, and more. This article uses real-world examples that show how these simple command-line programs can make you a better sysadmin. Also look at each data extraction utility and its options, and learn how to apply them to typical day-to-day work files. http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=15453
