tsu doh nimh writes "The Washington Post's Security Fix blog has published a rapid-fire succession of investigative stories on the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies, schools, and public institutions at the hands of organized cyber thieves and 'money mules,' willing or unwitting people recruited via online job scams. Some businesses are starting to challenge the financial industry's position that they are not responsible for online banking losses from things like keystroke logging malware that attacks customer PCs. Last week, a Maine firm sued its bank, saying the institution's lax approach to so-called multi-factor authentication failed after thieves stole $588,000 from the company, sending the money to dozens of money mules. The same group is thought to have taken $447,000 from a California wrecking company, whose bank also is playing hardball. tsu doh nimh writes "Organized cyber-gangs in Eastern Europe are increasingly preying on small and mid-size companies in the US, setting off a multimillion-dollar online crime wave that has begun to worry the nation's largest financial institutions, The Washington Post's Security Fix blog reports: '"In the past six months, financial institutions, security companies, the media and law enforcement agencies are all reporting a significant increase in funds transfer fraud involving the exploitation of valid banking credentials belonging to small and medium sized businesses," reads a confidential alert issued by the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, an industry group created to share data about critical threats to the financial sector.' The banking group is urging that commercial bank customers 'carry out all online banking activity from a standalone, hardened, and locked-down computer from which e-mail and Web browsing is not possible.' The story includes interviews with several victim businesses, and explains that in each case, the fraudsters — thought to reside in Eastern Europe — are using "'money mules,' unwitting or willing accomplices in the US hired via Internet job boards. Netcraft points out that Lynx supports the latest cryptographic ciphers, and at least one online banking site has seen Lynx usage overtake that of Internet Explorer and Firefox. Complicated security checks could be undermining confidence in online banking, warn experts. Security extras such as number fobs, card readers and password checks might make consumers more wary of net bank websites, they fear. The warning comes as research shows how phishing gangs are targeting attempts to grab customer login details. But the UK body overseeing net banking says figures show criminals are getting away with less from online accounts. In a bid to beat the bad guys many banks have added extra security checks to the login name and password typically used to get access to an account. Some, such as Lloyds, have trialled number generating key fobs and Barclays is trialling chip and pin card readers. The UK has seen an 8,000% increase in fake internet banking scams in the past two years, the government's financial watchdog has warned.The Financial Services Authority (FSA) stated it was 'very concerned' about the sophistication and prevalence of phishing attacks. Between January and June of 2005, the number of reported phishing attacks in the UK was 312; the figure for the same period this year was 5,059.It's estimated that a total of £46m will be stolen in the UK through such scams in 2006 alone. Philip Robinson, the FSA's head of financial crime, was quick to point out that online banking is generally 'safe', but that it was important banks were 'transparent and open' about security breaches to keep customer confidence high. greenechidna writes "The BBC is reporting that a vulnerability has been found in the online banking service of HSBC by researchers at Cardiff University. According to the story the attack would allow an attacker to log on to an account within 9 attempts. The attack relies on a keylogger being installed on the victim's machine. The article doesn't have any further technical details." David Nicholson adds links to coverage at CNN and at the Guardian, writing "The attack revolves around the order that customers are requested to enter random security numbers on the site. The main news stories fail to detail the vulnerability but I have provided an analysis of it here."
