1941: German engineer Konrad Zuse unveils the Z3, now generally recognized as the first fully functional, programmable computer.
Because Zuse designed and built his computer inside Nazi Germany, which was already at war, his achievement went unnoticed outside Germany until after the Third Reich's collapse. In the meantime, the Harvard Mark 1, a computer produced by an American team, appeared in 1944 and is still occasionally cited as the first of its kind.
Complicating Zuse's claim of priority, an air raid destroyed his computer, as well as all accompanying photographs and documentation. Zuse rebuilt the Z3 15 years after the war ended, to demonstrate its capabilities and to establish his claim to the patents associated with the machine.
The Z3, Zuse's third computer in a series of four, used the simple binary system for performing complicated mathematical computations -- its outstanding feature.
Zuse is also remembered for devising Plankalkül (calculation plan), an early programming language designed, although never implemented, for engineering purposes. Additionally, he's credited with founding the world's first computer startup company, Zuse-Ingenieurbüro Hopferau, or Zuse Engineering Office of Hopferau (Bavaria), in 1946.
Zuse's achievement, according to his son, was even more remarkable considering he worked independently, even in isolation, and remained unaware of contemporary developments in computer science. And unlike computer pioneers in the Allied countries, Zuse received precious little support from his government. The Nazis saw little military value in his computers and provided only very minimal funding.
Years later, Zuse was generously funded by Siemens and some other German companies when he rebuilt his Z1 computer as part of a retro computing project.
A replica of the Z3 (and the Z4) is on display at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

You thought it was complicated? It's getting worse. Last week's win by Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania could have been calibrated by a Republican god to maximise her party's discomfort: large enough to keep her in the race and raise fresh doubts about Barack Obama, but too small to break the deadlock, let alone give her an obvious path to the nomination. Now the action moves west and south, to Indiana and North Carolina in nine days' time – and with good prospect of more of the same.

Now that the iPhone free software unlock is available, you may be wondering how to use it. The answer: It's complicated. We did it here with two iPhones, it works flawlessly but the unlock process is not for consumers. Fortunately, develogoddess Erica Sadun is coming to the rescue soon with a one-click graphic application that uses the Dev Team unlock. So be patient and don't spend your cash on commercial software.
The application will be downloadable Installer.app on the iPhone as soon as it's finalized and fully tested.
The application will also be 100% legal. This means that it will probably still require you to upload to the iPhone two separate copyrighted files because nobody can distribute firmware material with their software. Once they are there, however, you will be able to unlock with just one click, no techno-mumbo-jumbo required.

Internet search leader Google is trying to convince federal and state authorities that Microsoft's Vista operating system is stifling competition as the high-tech heavyweights wrestle for the allegiance of personal computer users. In a 49-page document filed April 18 with the U.S. Justice Department and state attorneys general, Google alleged that the latest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system impairs the performance of 'desktop search' programs that find data stored on a computer's hard drive. Besides bogging down competing programs, Google alleged Microsoft had made it too complicated to turn off the desktop search feature built into Vista.http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=18078

Linux and open source aficionados might want to thank Grundig for its U900 cellphnone, which we somehow overlooked at 3SGM. The clamshell won't win any awards for unique or inspired design, but the fact that it's based on Linux should make more than a few of you wet like October. We're also partial to the UMTS support. It even has two built-in cameras: a 2-megapixel one for still shots and a VGA one for video. The phone is also one of the first to run on an single core, single chip architecture. While that generally leads to cheaper prices, it also complicates that whole "let's throw Linux on it!" scenario.
Probably the most significant Linux-based cellphone so far was the Greenphone. It lets developers acually—gasp!—develop applications for the phone. Crazy. Motorola got into the Linux game a little while ago, too, but they haven't exactly taken off in popularity. – Nicholas Deleon

Alles over Straight From Sam Walton's Mouth: New Details on Wal-Mart Movie Download Service |

Gizmodo | 2007-02-07 02:34:03
We have a lot of new details about Wal-Mart's movie download service—it is, as some feared, not as full-featured as we would have hoped, but it was repeatedly emphasized throughout the conversation that the service is very much in the "early beta stage," so they're "primarily focused on... improving what [they] offer." Full rundown follows. That said, here are some numbers. Movies come in two sizes: the larger "PC" size and the smaller portable one. They dodged the question about the resolution of movies (supposedly they're getting back to us and when they do, we'll let you know) but the PC version is "near DVD quality," which is to say it has a data rate of around 1.7 Mbps. TV shows, on the other hand, are decidedly focused on being quick downloads, with a data rate of 500-800 Kbps for the file.
All of the files are WMV for the time being, and are encrypted with Windows Media DRM. You can burn them for back up—they encourage customers to do so—but right now they're stuck on a single PC with the option to move them to up to "three compatible portable devices." They are working to the expand that, however. Moreover, only PCs (XP and higher) and only IE 6 and up. Firefox support is coming.
As we said earlier, they offer "3000 productions." This is "about evenly split" between movie and TV content, with each episode of a show counting as a single production in that number. No ABC, Fox, CBS or NBC yet, but they're working on it and "would like to be in business with everybody."
The way they got to be in business with "everybody" in the movie business, we should note, is by closely following the studios' set prices for movie downloads, which are designed not to cannibalize physical DVD sales. (Steve Jobs's refusal to cater to that price point, along with the fear of an iTunes monopoly, is why he as of yet, only has Paramount and Disney on board with iTunes.) Strongly emphasized throughout the interview was Wal-Mart's committal to ensuring a strong DVD market.
To that end, we found out how the discounts for consumers who buy both DVDs and digital movies works. Basically, when you buy the physical DVD, you will get a code allowing you to download the "portable" version of the movie for $1.97, the PC version for $2.97, and both for $3.97. (Much like they did with Superman Returns back in November.) This will be the major way the service is pushed and utilized, at least initially. Obviously, the service isn't intended to disrupt traditional means of movie watching.
Part of the non-disruptiveness is given Wal-Mart's view that "the business is new now," and they (along with everyone else) still "need to figure out how it works." So no big marketing campaign, at least for a while. It'll be featured on the site, and there will be some in-store promotion, but nothing big. It's still very much all about the physical Wal-Mart store, but expanding into "multi-channel and multi-format" distribution.
Lastly, while we're not thrilled with the current price points, it was clearly stated that the studio "sets the price," and Wal-Mart is pursuing and will continue to advocate for "a good price for the customer," which we interpret to mean lower prices.
If this service fails, the blame rests mostly on Hollywood's shoulders, since most of these terms were dictated by the studios. Middle America isn't the target for this service, at least for right now, largely due to its beta status, but also, we think, because of the unnecessary restrictions placed on it by the studios, making it too complicated for Wal-Mart's core customers. And that is a big mistake on the part of the "Big Six," one they may soon pay for. – Matt Buchanan

Spybot Search and Destroy searches your hard drive for so-called spy- or adbots; that is, little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs display. Many of these modules also transmit information, including your surfing behavior on the Internet. If it finds such modules, it can remove them. In most cases the host still runs fine after removing the spyware/adware.Another feature is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three major browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, and Opera.http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/rmdp/170
