Alles over Get Ready For Wikia Search; First Screen Shots Shown In South Africa | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:55
It was eleven months ago that Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales first mentioned his vision for a people-powered search engine that would eventually launch under his for profit startup, Wikia. Not much has happened since then, other than a lot of chatter on an email discussion list, and the small acquisition of Grub, a distributed web crawling company, from Looksmart. The official site for Wikia Search is here. But the promise has been for Wikia Search to launch this year, and it appears to be on track. Yesterday Matthew Buckland reported that Wales showed some of the first screen shots of the new project (the first, as far as I know). The main screen shot is a profile page for a user (see above) that looks surprisingly like a Facebook profile. The Man v. Machine debate as it applies to search is about to begin. By this time next year we should have lots of data on the performance of Wikia Search, as well as the new startup Mahalo which is also in this space. Until then, we can spend our time speculating and, I guess, continuing to live with Google for our search needs.Wikia Loading information about Wikia&Mahalo Loading information about Mahalo& [!SCRIPT FILTERED!] [!SCRIPT FILTERED!] [!SCRIPT FILTERED!] Crunch Network: CrunchBoard because its time for you to find a new Job2.0 Can't see the video? iRiver has decked out its Disney Mplayer with Swarovski crystal-studded ears in a myriad of colors and combinations, with five different base colors to choose from (black, silver, white, blue and pink). This Disney Mplayer is a special edition version and can be ordered online, but they ought to go pretty fast since only 500 units will be shipped within Japan at $150 a pop. The Japanese really love themselves some Mickey Mouse, don't they? It will be released in April next year, and hopefully worldwide or else rampaging fanboys across the globe will have some major beef against the Big N. How much are you willing for fork out for this Wii SNES controller? At least it adds more realism to those Virtual Console titles - now how about MegaDrive and Turbo Grafx 16 versions of the controller as well? Alles over iRiver teases with D27 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:52
iRiver has set tongues wagging and imagination moving with the D27 device, with the letter "D" most probably meaning 'dictionary' as found in the D5. What are the specifications of the D27? Nobody knows for sure, but some of us are betting that it will come with a QWERTY keyboard right underneath the hinged surface, WiFi connectivity and maybe even HSDPA capability. Alles over Redline receives FCC nod for WiMAX gear | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:51
Redline Communications have received the FCC's approval for its RedMAX AN-100U WiMAX base station in the US, making it the first 3.65 GHz WiMAX product to be approved for operation here. This will enable operators in the country to deploy WiMAX services using the newly-available 3.65 GHz spectrum. Alles over M2E Power to harness kinetic energy | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:49
M2E Power aims to commercialize its battery technology that harnesses kinetic energy, turning motion into electrical power. The first target would be to develop a D-size battery for the military, followed by those meant for consumer use later. Currently, soldiers in the field rely a whole lot on D and AA-size batteries to power their gear, and these batteries add unwanted weight (up to 30 pounds) to their entire backpack while discarded batteries leave traces of movements. M2E Power hopes to apply the Faraday Principle in its development, and want to achieve lighter batteries that are able to last twice as long due to a less taxing charging algorithm.
Source: http://www.vidaextra.com/2007/11/16-wii-y-la-economia-de-la-escasez q256 http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/239129
Alles over LG goes for removable speakers | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:49
LG has developed removable acoustic transducers that will be able to perform different functions in different modes - whenever hooked to a cellphone, it acts as traditional speakers and a microphone, but when you remove them, the transducers end up as wireless earphones. The transducers can selectively implement one of a speaker for emanating a sound and a microphone for converting sound waves into electrical signals. For example, the microphone senses small vibrations of the user’s vocal cords when generated through a vibration plate, amplifies them and converts them into electrical signals, and the speaker emanates the sound of the signals from the vibration plate. There isn't further elaboration on LG's part, and I wonder when will such technology be implemented. As with anything new, sooner is always better - just keep the price point low/affordable. Alles over Certified Wireless USB for CardBus PC Card in Japan | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-16 20:07:44
With at least two offerings of Certified Wireless USB hubs that provide only a fragile dongle as a DWA, laptop users maybe hoping for someone to come up with a WUSB card that fits snugly into their spared CardBus slot. Their wish is granted, sorta. Ratoc's WUSB CardBus solution is shipping only in Japan, and is tailored to satisfy local FCC for operation in between 3.6 and 3.8Ghz waveband. The company claims ExpressCard version will come in 2009, around the same time as PC builders start to ship WUSB-integrated notebooks in mass production. The report also revealed the possibility of sending video signals wirelessly to a regular LCD thru USB. We aren't too sure how practical it is given the early chipset implementations. Switching to music mode will see next and previous keys, a play/pause key, a shuffle playback key, and a repeat key. Alles over The Office game is better than you'd think | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:42
Filed under: PC, CasualWhen thinking of TV shows to transform into games, The Office isn't the first on the list. The show is light on the sort of sophomoric hijinx that usually passes for humor in games and pretty heavy on the talking. That said, the casual game version of NBC's hit show actual fares a bit better than one might expect, earning a four-star review from Gamezebo. If you've played Diner Dash, you're already familiar with the time management fetch-and-return gameplay of The Office, though there's an added twist of competing against another cubicle dweller. Judging from the demo we played, the writing's nowhere near as sharp as the TV show's (big surprise), but it's at least true enough to be respectful. (We do, however, take umbrage with the addition of a laugh track to some of the game. Seriously, guys? A laugh track?) We're not sure it would qualify as a necessary purchase, but fans of the show will probably find a few minutes of diversion.(Full disclosure: The author occasionally contributes to Gamezebo.)Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: http://feeds.joystiq.com/~r/weblogsinc/joystiq/~3/184206876/ Justin McElroy http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/238443

Alles over Samsung rolls out 2nd gen WiMAX devices | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:41
Samsung has just unveiled a quartet of mobile WiMAX devices in Korea, making these the forerunners of 2nd gen devices in the WiMAX arena. These come in different form factors, with the SPH-M8200 being in a PDA mold while the SPH-P9200 is somewhat a mobile convergence device with the SPH-H1300 and SWT-200K being shaped after a USB modem. No idea on how much these devices cost, but they're currently available via Korea Telecom's Mobile WiMAX network if you're interested. Alles over XO laptop hacked | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:41
I guess it is but a matter of time before the OLPC XO laptop gets hacked, and here we have a video of such an example. The XO laptop was hacked to control a telepresence-enabled Roomba, allowing you to control the rig from a Web browser, accessing the XO laptop's webcam and microphone in order to know what's going on in its immediate surroundings. Instead of going through all that hassle, why not settle for a spy camera of some sort instead? Alles over Spotlight in 10.5 skips over user Library files | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:40
Filed under: LeopardWondering why your Adium chat logs aren't showing up in Spotlight search now that you're running Leopard? Vincent Noel was wondering, and he tracked down the reason: files in your user ~/Library folder are now not reported by Spotlight, unless you enable "Include" to show system files (easiest way: invoke Spotlight with Command-Option-Space to perform a "universal search"). This search hiccup also affects Journler, and presumably any other third-party app which stores files in ~/Library.It seems that files inside your Library folder are considered off-limits for basic Spotlight results... which is kinda funny, because that's where Mail.app keeps your messages, and those are sure searchable. OK, so files Apple applications store there are fine -- everything else is off limits. Hmm.Thanks, Vincent.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: http://feeds.tuaw.com/~r/weblogsinc/tuaw/~3/184212944/ Michael Rose http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/238447
Alles over 'Mass Effect' censurado en Singapur | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:38
Alles over Tim Schafer would 'love' to make an XBLA game | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:37
Filed under: Culture, Microsoft Xbox 360We, like all good and wise people, love Tim Schafer. What we don't love is having to wait years between fresh infusions of Double Fine goodness. So it gave us no small amount of pleasure to hear that while speaking at the 2007 IGDA Leadership Forum, Schafer said he'd love to make a small XBLA game, even though he didn't have one in the works."We talk about making Xbox Live Arcade games all the time. Who doesn't want to make Xbox Live Arcade games?" he said. "It's like when you see a Great Dane taking a giant shit and then you see a poodle taking a little Tootsie Roll shit. The poodle is so cute, but at the end of the day you're still picking up shit. Seriously though, we'd love to make Xbox Live Arcade games, but we're really busy now." ... We're not exactly sure what you meant by that, Tim. But we're fairly sure we couldn't have said it better ourselves.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Source: http://feeds.joystiq.com/~r/weblogsinc/joystiq/~3/184220555/ Justin McElroy http://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/238449
Alles over Android prototype for the curious | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:37
Looks like Google's Android platform for the cellphone is set to go tough on the iPhone with a really hot looking user interface that will adorn some rather sexy handsets sometime next year. A prototype of the Android-enabled phone is already available, and man does it look sweet. Applications on Android include Google Maps, a photo slideshow that works great and the ability to run Quake on virtually any handset - making the Android operating system being versatile for use in both high- and low-end markets, featuring the ability to accommodate both keypad and touch sensitive controls. What are some of the other apps you would like to see appear on an Android handset? Alles over Extreme Range WiFi Router | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | | 2007-11-13 20:07:37
If you live in a small apartment, virtually any WiFi router would do fine - but those who actually own large mansions will find the Extreme Range WiFi Router to be a much more suitable candidate. It blasts out both 802.11b and 802.11g at 30dBm of power (the strongest radio permissible by the FCC), enabling your WiFi signal to reach a whopping quarter mile in all directions! You won't find your security compromised though as it supports WPA-Enterprise, WPA2, and WEP if you like. For those who want the best in life, you can't go wrong with the Extreme Range WiFi Router.
