simoniker writes "As part of a recent MI6 Conference presentation, IDG's Jason Anderson made predictions on the North American installed base of the next-gen consoles through 2008. He predicts that the Xbox 360 will continue to hold a lead into 2009, with the PS3 just behind and the Wii trailing significantly. In particular: 'In 2008, Anderson suggests 15.5 million units in homes for the Xbox 360, 13.5 million for PS3, and 6.8 million for Wii.' Is the Wii really going to trail by so much, or do the analysts not 'get it'?"

De verkoop van televisietoestellen met een platte beeldbuis zal voor het eerst in 2009 die van het aantal verkochte beeldbuisapparaten voorbijgaan. Dat blijkt uit ramingen van twee marktonderzoeksbureaus. Lcd wint het daarbij ruimschoots van de plasmaschermen.
De vraag naar heel grote lcd-schermen valt overigens nog erg tegen. De Aziatische producenten zijn daarom inmiddels al op de rem gaan staan. Slechts één van de vijf nieuwe fabrieken die eerder door lcd-producenten werden aangekondigd, is daadwerkelijk in aanbouw.
Voor consumenten kan dat betekenen dat de prijsdalingen van schermen met een beeldmaat van 50 inch over twee of drie jaar minder snel zullen zijn dan momenteel het geval is. Maar de groei van kleinere beeldmaten is onverminderd fenomenaal. Fabrikanten zetten dan ook alles op alles om de productiecapaciteit op peil te houden en de aanvoer van onderdelen veilig te stellen.
Dit jaar zullen tv's met een lcd- of een plasmascherm ongeveer eenvijfde uitmaken van de rond 190 miljoen toestellen die worden verkocht. Tot 2009 zal dat stijgen naar ongeveer 50% en in 2010 al boven de 60% uitkomen. In dat jaar zullen naar verwachting 210 miljoen televisies over de toonbank gaan, volgens ramingen van onderzoeksbureaus DisplaySearch en iSupply. A team of researchers hope to create lab-grown meat by 2009 that smells and tastes just like the real thing. The ability to grow small quantities of muscle using stem cells is routinely done by scientists, but now they're looking to bring mass quantities of synthetic meat to supermarkets. One of those researchers, Paul Kosnik, is growing self-assembled muscle in the lab:"All of the technology exists today to make ground meat products in vitro. We believe the goal of a processed meat product is attainable in the next five years if funding is available and the R&D is pursued aggressively."The researchers say the first artificial meat products will be minced meat that tastes just like ground beef or sausage. They're also saying that a single stem cell could theoretically produce all of the meat consumed in the world for a year.
It's going to be a challenge to create just the right mixture of muscle and fat to give burgers that juicy, yummy taste. If this test tube meat can be mass produced, it will be a great boon to our non-sustainable meat-eating culture. Oh yeah, and they also will need to convince people to eat it. – Charlie White
