Steeds meer mensen zoeken hulp via internet. Dat blijkt uit het jaarverslag 2005 van de stichting SOShulp Nederland. Het aantal hulpvragen via chat en email is ten opzichte van 2004 met 39% gestegen. Sinds 2000 is dit aantal zelfs vertienvoudigd.

An anonymous reader writes "A planned terrorist attack on New York City was reportedly foiled by FBI agents who monitored chat rooms frequented by extremists. Lebanese authorities captured an Al Qaeda member who confessed to the plot, and stated that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had pledged financial and other support for the operation. Although the planning for the operation was not far along, according to U.S. officials, they had already been monitoring the plot for a year." From the article: "A government official with knowledge of the investigation said the alleged plot did focus on New York's transport system, but did not target the Holland Tunnel. New York senator Charles Schumer said: 'This is one instance where intelligence was on top of its game and discovered the plot when it was just in the talking phase.' The Holland Tunnel is protected not just by bedrock, but also by concrete and cast-iron steel. One counter-terrorism source told the Daily News it was doubtful a plot to blow it up would be feasible, saying huge amounts of explosives and a detailed knowledge of blast effect would be necessary."

U.S. and Lebanese agents have foiled terrorist plans to attack New York's transportation system, U.S. authorities said today. Counterrorism sources confirmed that a plot to blow up tunnels in lower Manhattan was uncovered several months ago when intelligence about the plan emerged in chat rooms on the Internet.

The video chat company PalTalk will go live on Monday with a new social networking service designed to be a proof of concept for the inclusion of video chat in social networks. PalTalk already has a thriving business in powering huge video chat rooms but the company believes their technology is the next logical step to create what they call Social Networking 3.0. If the first iteration was basic networking, 2.0 was layering richer self expression on the networks and 3.0 is real time video communication, they say. Makes sense to me. PalTalk operates through a Windows desktop client and has already proven itself very scalable. It uses GAIM to create a consolidated buddy list across AIM, Yahoo Messenger and ICQ. The company says that its 4 million users often have 5,000 chat rooms open at any given time. The largest room theyve had open at once included 3,000 people. Cringe-radio stars Opie and Anthony use PalTalk for their chat room and regularly interact with between 1 and 2 thousand people at the same time. I asked the people behind PalTalk how that would be logistically feasible and they said there was a lot of hand-raising going on.Mondays launch of the social networking system, called People 2.0, will demonstrate the usefulness and feasibility of video chat in social networking, the company hopes. The technology will then be licensed anywhere that groups of people gather online. PalTalks technology is currently free to download, with a paid upgrade available but no prices or service level comparison easily discoverable. The fact that there is no Mac version of PalTalk is a real shame and the company says that is one of their most frequent requests. The particular social networking implementation unveiled Monday is likely to be unimportant in its other features and details, but the company did tell me they were interested in pursuing open identity standards - for whatever thats worth.If social networking is really about more than just contacts between individuals and if people do want to connect in real time with a community of interest - then group video chat makes sense to me. Text chat in the social networking world is so anemic right now that I can imagine video chat setting the space on fire. Will people download desktop clients to access the function? Probably. Will they pay for it? Maybe, but licensees may offer it for free as well. WASHINGTON - De Afghaanse autoriteiten gaan er vanuit dat in het land 10.000 tot 15.000 radicaalislamitische Taliban strijden. De minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Hanif Atmar maakte deze schatting vrijdag tijdens een bezoek in Washington bekend. Het was een van de zeldzame keren dat de regering cijfers gaf over het aantal Taliban-opstandelingen. Volgens Kabul is het moeilijk de beweging te omschrijven.De Taliban zouden in hooguit zeventien van de 34 Afghaanse provincies actief zijn. Volgens Atmar zijn de meeste strijders buitenlanders die samenwerken met het terreurnetwerk al-Qaeda of Centraal-Aziatische extremisten. Tienduizenden buitenlandse militairen, onder wie ook Nederlandse strijdkrachten, zijn in Afghanistan actief om een einde te maken aan de opstand van de Taliban tegen de machthebbers.

Brown stort 12.415 pond terug in schatkist

LONDEN - De Britse premier Gordon Brown gaat 12.415 pond (ongeveer 13.250 euro) terugstorten in de schatkist. © ANP De BBC meldde maandag dat de Labour-politicus dat doet in verband met het onderzoek naar alle declaraties die leden van het parlement in Groot-Brittannië in de afgelopen vijf jaar indienden.De toets werd uitgevoerd na het uitbreken van het declaratieschandaal in mei, na een publicatie in de krant Daily Mail. Britse parlementariërs bleken erg creatief om te gaan met de regels. Zo bleek dat leden van het Hogerhuis en het Lagerhuis dure tv's, meubels, hypotheken en zelfs porno bekostigden met geld van de belastingbetaler. Regels Volgens Sir Thomas Legg, die het onderzoek naar de declaraties leidde, heeft Brown geen regels overtreden. Het totaalbedrag van de declaraties van de Labour-premier komt echter wel uit boven de normen die Legg opstelde na het uitbreken van het schandaal. Brown gaat onder meer geld terugbetalen dat hij ontving voor het schoonmaken van een van zijn woningen en voor tuinonderhoud.Alle Britse parlementariërs ontvangen deze dagen een brief van Legg. Brown is niet de enige die geld moet terugstorten. Nick Clegg, de leider van de Liberaal Democraten, moet bijvoorbeeld 910 pond (ruim 970 euro) terugbetalen van de 3900 pond die hij tussen 2006 en 2009 declareerde voor het onderhoud van zijn tuin. David Cameron David Cameron van de Conservatieve Partij betaalde in een eerder stadium al 218 pond (233 euro) terug omdat hij in 2006 te veel had gedeclareerd voor zijn hypotheeklasten. De BBC meldt dat de onderzoekers Cameron hebben gevraagd om nadere uitleg over de kwestie.In de afgelopen maanden trad een groot aantal parlementariërs en bewindspersonen af nadat ze in opspraak waren geraakt wegens hun declaratiegedrag.

Gijs Wanders Van Steenbergen leidt de Landelijke Coördinatiestructuur Infectiebestrijding van het RIVM. Hij gaat door in het tweede uur, van 16.30 tot 17.30 uur; dan bijgestaan door Paul Huijts, directeur-generaal Volksgezondheid van het ministerie.Gijs Wanders leidt de sessie op www.grieppandemie.nl/videochat.
