An anonymous reader writes "In this week's issue of Nature, scientists from Princeton University trained mice to navigate around a virtual environment using a setup that resembles a combination of a giant trackball and a mini-iMax theater displaying a virtual world rendered using a modified version of the Quake 2 open source game engine. (Here's the academic paper, subscription required.) They hold the mouse's head still atop a giant trackball, which the mouse turns by running. The scientists use the rotations to move the mouse around in the virtual environment, and when he reaches certain places, he gets a reward. Because they are able to hold the head still, they can stick microscopic glass electrodes into individual neurons in the hippocampus of this mouse as it 'navigates.' They find the neural activity that resembles activity during real life navigation, and learned new things about the inputs and computations that are going on inside these neurons, which weren't known before. No word as of yet whether the scientists plan on giving the mice control of the gun. Wonder whether John Carmack ever envisioned this when he opened up the Quake code?"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Al writes "Nicholas Fang and colleagues at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created the first acoustic superlens, which could be used to create high-resolution ultrasound images, and perhaps ultimately make subs and ships invisible to sonar. Researchers have previously developed materials that bend light in ways that appear to violate the laws of physics, creating so-called optical superlenses. The acoustic superlens consists of an aluminum array of narrow-necked resonant cavities filed with water — the dimensions of the cavities are tuned to interact with ultrasound waves. When ultrasound waves move through the array, the cavities resonate and the sound is refocused."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Ashutosh Saxena writes "Stanford artificial intelligence researchers have developed software that makes it easy to reach inside an existing video and place a photo on the wall so realistically that it looks like it was there from the beginning. The photo is not pasted on top of the existing video, but embedded in it. It works for videos as well — you can play a video on a wall inside your video. The technology can cheaply do some of the tricks normally performed by expensive commercial editing systems. The researchers suggest that anyone with a video camera might earn some spending money by agreeing to have unobtrusive corporate logos placed inside their videos before they are posted online."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

LIPI scientists fear Bengkulu quake to trigger bigger one
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Bengkulu earthquake and its aftershocks during the past two days may trigger a bigger temblor, two scientists at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) say.
"I hope it does not happen. But conditions to the north of the Mentawai segment are ripe, under pressure and locked, albeit still dormant. The recent quake which occurred in the southern segment could well trigger a temblor ...http://maluku.prikpagina.nl/read.php?f=965&i=16775&t=16775

In our current quest to stop giving the kings of Saudi Arabia billions of dollars to build yachts and bombs via our love affair with gasoline, some scientists at a company called LS9 claim to have figured out a way to grow petroleum from bacteria. The exciting prospect could shoot us to energy independence in a matter of years, as LS9 says their tech will be ready for the prime time in just a few years.
How does it work? The company is employing tools from the field of synthetic biology to modify the genetic pathways that bacteria, plants and animals use to make fatty acids, one of the main ways that organisms store energy. Fatty acids are chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms strung together in a particular arrangement, with a carboxylic acid group made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen attached at one end. Take away the acid, and you're left with a hydrocarbon that can be made into fuel. What does that all mean? I don't know, I'm no doctor. I just know that if we could grow our own gas it would solve a lot of problems. [Technology Review via The Raw Feed]

Just when everyone thought non-fuel cell battery technology was stagnant, scientists at the Department of Energys Argonne National Laboratory found a way to increase battery life by up to twice as much. Sparing you to boring technical details, essentially what they did was find a new composite structure material to place inside batteries, giving the charge-store capacity a 250 mAh/g, which is about twice as much as what youre using now.So, not only will this improve battery life in your laptops, itll bulk up a bunch of consumer electronics and hybrid vehicles as well. Score one for scientists. And score another for that horrible Photoshop. – Jason ChenScientists double the capacity of rechargeable lithium batteries [TGDaily via Slashgear]Source: http://www.gigabeat.co.uk/blog/05/08/2007/laptops/lions-scientists-make-li-ion-batteries-last-twice-as-long-in-lab-testshttp://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/136301

Or will it mean film studios can stop movies from being copied when traveling on the internet?"

Vicissidude writes "A team of American and British researchers has made a cloak of invisibility. In their experiment the scientists used microwaves to try and detect a copper cylinder. Like light and radar waves, microwaves bounce off objects making them visible and creating a shadow, though it has to be detected with instruments. If you can hide something from microwaves, you can hide it from radar and visible light. In effect the device, made of metamaterials — engineered mixtures of metal and circuit board materials, which could include ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite materials — channels the microwaves around the object being hidden. When water flows around a rock, co-author David R. Smith explained, the water recombines after it passes the rock and people looking at the water downstream would never know it had passed a rock. The first working cloak was in only two dimensions and did cast a small shadow, Smith acknowledged. The next step is to go for three dimensions and to eliminate any shadow."

If a Korean company gets its way, it wont be long before we start seeing portable media devices with 3D displays. Developed by Innertech, these displays are outfitted with a module that, according to reports, can deliver 3D images on a 4.3-inch PMP display. Right now, the company is in talks with cellphone companies to take its technology to the nascent world of multimedia-firendly cellphones. No word on when (or, more accurately, if) well ever see this technology actually in products. A man can dream, though.Obviously, the third dimension is somewhat hard to depict with flat photos, but does the thought of cellphones and other portable devices with 3D displays rev your engine? – Nicholas DeleonEnjoy 3D display on PMP [Aving USA via New Launches]Source: http://www.gigabeat.co.uk/blog/09/12/2006/gadgets/3d-displays-to-make-their-way-to-portable-deviceshttp://www.softwareheadlines.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/36694

Whether we're inspired by the The Invisible Man or the more recent Harry Potter series, the ability to vanish at will is something that most of us would love to possess. Not only could we duck out of embarrassing situations, but we could spy on our friends and enemies - or even sit in on conversations between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Not to mention the nefarious uses to which an invisibility cloak could be put, such as shoplifting and robbing banks. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/science_technology/article994603.ece
