laxl writes "Linux vendor Red Hat has open sourced the Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment (SPICE) virtual desktop protocol it acquired last year with Qumranet, which used SPICE for its own commercial desktop-virtualization product, called SolidIce. SPICE can be used to deploy virtual desktops from a server out to remote computers, such as desktop PCs and thin-client devices. It is similar to other rendering protocols used for remote desktop management such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol or Citrix's Independent Computing Architecture. SPICE supports rendering virtual instances of Windows XP and Windows 7, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. According to Red Hat, SPICE has advantages over other protocols in that it can dynamically customize desktop instances to fit specific operating environments. According to the article, most of the SPICE code is available under the GNU GPLv2, though parts are also licensed under LGPL- and BSD-styled licenses."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Stony Stevenson writes "New Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst has hit out at enterprises, bemoaning that billions of dollars are wasted each year because 95% of companies won't share code. Speaking at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco, he said his company must take a larger role in urging enterprises how they can participate in open source projects and, in some cases, coax code contributions out of companies that have made in-house improvements. He now feels Red Hat should lead the way "It should be part of Red Hat's job to define development in a new way, and get companies to work together" on shared projects, he said. The joint development projects would be designed to cover non-competitive parts of an industry, with individual companies still focused on their own competitive business applications. "We should also make sure we're involved in that," he said"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Red Hat Global Desktop 'would be sold with a one-year subscription to security updates.'" It looks like another choice for the proverbial Aunt Tillie. The release is being delayed in order to provide greater media compatibility, "to permit users to view a wide range of video formats on their computers."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Even though patent talks between Microsoft and Red Hat broke down last year before Microsoft went on to sign a technical collaboration and patent indemnity deal with Novell, Red Hat is still willing to work with the Redmond software maker on the interoperability front. But the Linux vendor wants to limit those talks to pure interoperability between Windows and Red Hat Linux, with the goal of solving real customer problems, Paul Cormier, Red Hat's executive vice president of engineering, told eWEEK."I want to talk to the folks at Microsoft about our two operating systems and how we can work together to solve real customer problems without attaching any unrelated strings, such as intellectual property," he said. While Cormier declined to comment on why its earlier talks with Microsoft fell through, he ruled out any possibility of Red Hat doing a deal with Microsoft like the controversial patent agreement and covenant not to sue that Redmond penned with Novell last year, especially after viewing the limited information that is publicly available on that deal. Recent Research from Forrester | 2007-06-11 02:26:54
Bundled communications services that combine local and long-distance voice, Internet access, and mobile voice are big hits among small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) in North America. Our 2007 SMB Network And Telecommunications, North America And Europe, Q1 2007 Survey results show that nearly 75% of North American SMBs currently subscribe to some type of bundled service. Buyers like the lower cost and single source that these deals bring. Telecom marketing executives like the long-term commitments that these contracts require; but, how can they grow the business even more after that? Offering SMBs additional value-added services, including software-as-a-service (SaaS), email, Web site hosting, and security services, is one way to increase revenue streams and further lock in SMB customers in specific markets.http://www.forrester.com/go?docid=42526&src=RSS_TopicGroupFeed
