Alles over Red Hat Open Sources SPICE Desktop Virtualization | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-12-11 15:48:11
laxl writes "Linux vendor Red Hat has open sourced the Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment (SPICE) virtual desktop protocol it acquired last year with Qumranet, which used SPICE for its own commercial desktop-virtualization product, called SolidIce. SPICE can be used to deploy virtual desktops from a server out to remote computers, such as desktop PCs and thin-client devices. It is similar to other rendering protocols used for remote desktop management such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol or Citrix's Independent Computing Architecture. SPICE supports rendering virtual instances of Windows XP and Windows 7, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. According to Red Hat, SPICE has advantages over other protocols in that it can dynamically customize desktop instances to fit specific operating environments. According to the article, most of the SPICE code is available under the GNU GPLv2, though parts are also licensed under LGPL- and BSD-styled licenses."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat Releases Windows Virtualization Code | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-08-27 01:48:04
dan_johns writes "Only one month after Microsoft released Linux code to improve the performance of Linux guests on Windows, Red Hat has done the same — in reverse. Red Hat has quietly released a set of drivers to improve the performance of Windows guests hosted on Linux's Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor. The netkvm driver is a network driver and viostor is a Storport driver to improve the performance of high-end storage. This release includes paravirtual block drivers for Windows. Linux and Windows — virtually coming together at last."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Microsoft and Red Hat Team Up On Virtualization | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-02-17 04:05:19
mjasay writes "For years Microsoft has insisted that open-source vendors acknowledge its patent portfolio as a precursor to interoperability discussions. Today, Microsoft shed that charade and announced an interoperability alliance with Red Hat for virtualization. The nuts-and-bolts of the agreement are somewhat pedantic, providing for Red Hat to validate Windows Server guests to be supported on Red Hat Enterprise virtualization technologies, and other technical support details. But the real crux of the agreement is what isn't there: patents. Red Hat has long held that open standards and open APIs are the key to interoperability, even as Microsoft insisted patents play a critical role in working together, and got Novell to buy in. Today, Red Hat's vision seems to have won out with an interoperability deal heavy on technical integration and light on lawyers."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat releases Enterprise Linux 5 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2007-03-16 06:35:05 Linux vendor Red Hat has announced the availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5), the latest version of the company's commercial Linux distribution. Featuring tightly integrated virtualization technology, broader hardware support, and improved interoperability, RHEL5 is the culmination of two years of focused development work undertaken in collaboration with the open source software community. In addition to conventional desktop and server editions, Red Hat plans to offer a small assortment of specialized RHEL5-based solutions designed for datacenters, database servers, and high-performance computing clusters. With the release of RHEL5, Red Hat is also planning to launch a new open-source Internet marketplace called Red Hat Exchange (RHX) that will facilitate the deployment of commercial, third-party open-source applications on RHEL installations. RHX will allow consumers to buy software support services for third-party open-source technologies like MySQL databasesoftware and SugarCRM customer management systems directly from Red Hat. The company will provide first-tier support for software deployed through RHX via Cooperative Resolution Center. The strategic shift represented by Red Hat's new RHX service could give the company an edge in an increasingly competitive market for open-source services and support. Providing support for a wide variety of third-party products will require the company to significantly expand the scope of its support infrastructure and maintain close ties with numerous vendors. Alles over Red Hat Readies RHEL 5 for March 14 Launch | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-03-06 15:31:59
Rob writes "The wait is almost over. It may have taken two weeks longer than Red Hat would have liked, but Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, the updated version of the company's commercial Linux platform, will be launched along with a bevy of new products and services on March 14. The delivery of RHEL 5, the fourth major commercial server release for Red Hat, will better position its Linux against Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 as well as Windows, Unix, and proprietary platforms. RHEL 5 has been cooking for more than two years and includes changes to the Linux kernel. In addition to the support for the Xen hypervisor, RHEL 5 also has an integrated version of Red Hat Cluster Suite, the company's high availability clustering software, as well as support for iSCSI disk arrays, InfiniBand with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA), and the SystemTap kernel probing tool."

Alles over Red Hat releases Fedora Core 6 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-10-25 10:21:33
On Tuesday, Red Hat released Fedora Core 6, its newest hobbyist version of Linux, with an expandable new installation routine and a third try at incorporating Xen virtualization software. Fedora Core 6, free and faster-moving alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is in effect a rough draft of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, to be released in late 2006 or early 2007. The biggest change coming with RHEL 5 is Xen, open-source virtualization software that lets multiple operating systems run simultaneously, each in its own separate compartment called a virtual machine. Virtualization, a high-end feature now arriving in x86 servers, lets a single server replace several less efficiently used ones. Xen appeared in Fedora Core 4 and 5, but the version in Fedora Core 6 should be close to what appears in RHEL 5, said Max Spevack, the Fedora project leader. One major feature is a graphical administration tool to control Xen virtual machines. Also in Fedora Core 6 is Linux eye candy, based on the AIGLX project and the Compiz window manager. The features require 3D graphics video support, but permit several features. Among them, desktops of the graphical user interface can be mapped to faces of a virtual 3D cube that users can rotate. And windows can become transparent and wobbly like Jell-O when moved. The Linux version also switches to the DejaVu font, an open-source font project derived from Bitstream's Vera typeface.
