Alles over Linux, Twitter, and Red Hat "Win" Big At Pwnie Awards | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-08-01 02:25:25
hugmeplz writes "The third annual Pwnie Awards took place last night at Black Hat in Las Vegas, and a full list of the winners has been posted. 'Most Epic Fail' honors went to the notorious Twitter/Google Apps hack from earlier this month that raised all sorts of questions about cloud computing security. Red Hat got skewered with the 'Mass 0wnage' award, also known as the 'Pwnie for Breaking the Internet,' for issuing a version of OpenSSH that left a backdoor open to hackers. The Linux development team earned 'Lamest Vendor Response' recognition for 'continually assuming that all kernel memory corruption bugs are only Denial-of-Service.' Naturally, Microsoft didn't slip past judges' eyes. Its vulnerability that enabled the Conficker worm to do its thing earned honors as the 'Most Overhyped Bug.' On the more positive side, the Pwnie Awards recognized security pros Wei Yongjun, sgrakkyu, Sebastian Kramer and Bernhard Mueller for accomplishments such as discovering bugs and demonstrating exploits. The Pwnie for Best Song went to Doctor Braid for his song Nice Report. Solar Designer snagged the Lifetime Achievement Award, for among other things, being the first to demonstrate heap buffer overflow exploitation, according to the Pwnie Awards Web site."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat Claims Patent On SOAP Over CGI | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-03-20 21:10:42
WMGarrison writes "US Patent 7453593 claims command-line processing by a web server of SOAP requests, resulting in XML responses, from and to a remote client. The HTTP Common Gateway Interface (CGI) operates precisely as described in Claim 1. If you POST a SOAP document and return an XHTML response or a SOAP document, this infringes Claim 2, since both XHTML and SOAP are XML languages. This patent thus claims to own the processing of SOAP documents by CGI programs."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Microsoft and Red Hat Team Up On Virtualization | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2009-02-17 04:05:19
mjasay writes "For years Microsoft has insisted that open-source vendors acknowledge its patent portfolio as a precursor to interoperability discussions. Today, Microsoft shed that charade and announced an interoperability alliance with Red Hat for virtualization. The nuts-and-bolts of the agreement are somewhat pedantic, providing for Red Hat to validate Windows Server guests to be supported on Red Hat Enterprise virtualization technologies, and other technical support details. But the real crux of the agreement is what isn't there: patents. Red Hat has long held that open standards and open APIs are the key to interoperability, even as Microsoft insisted patents play a critical role in working together, and got Novell to buy in. Today, Red Hat's vision seems to have won out with an interoperability deal heavy on technical integration and light on lawyers."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat's Max Spevack On Defending Linux Freedom | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2008-11-23 15:51:33
TRNick writes "How can developers who are working for free protect themselves and avoid getting exploited by business users of Linux? TechRadar has an interview with former Fedora project leader Max Spevack to find out how his new role as manager of the community architecture team is designed to help. Quoting: 'About two-thirds of the Fedora packages are maintained by community people, and if we didn't have that community, that chunk of work would either not get done, which would significantly harm Red Hat's entire value, or would have to made up by more [paid] engineers. The challenge on the flip side of that is to make sure that everyone in the Fedora community feels valued, that everyone who contributes can be proud of the way that Red Hat uses their code.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

eldavojohn writes "Red Hat's CEO prophetically saith 'The clouds will all run Linux' in a brief interview before the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo. Here's the skinny: Red Hat management tools take a back seat to grid computing goals, high switching costs are the trick to surviving slow periods, Microsoft's interoperability tools are vaporware, they're striving to catch up to VMWare, Ubuntu is not the competition, JBoss is growing twice as fast as RHEL and Amazon pays the fee while Google wears its own Red Hat for free."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Microsoft Bets Big On Computing For the Car | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2008-07-29 17:03:46
dstates writes "The automobile industry may be hurting, but Microsoft is doubling down and making a massive new investment in its automotive business unit. Microsoft already works closely with a number of car companies and will enhance that effort with more people and more resources. Sync developed as a collaboration with FordMotor Co. allows motorists to control their cell phones, music players and navigation systems with voice commands while they drive. Microsoft is also making 'Live Search' technology available to automakers to develop in-car search and navigation. Detroit native Tom Philips, the new unit leader said 'There are a lot of technologies that are two to three years out that are going to provide even more connectivity and innovation. There's such a disconnect between what people experience in their cars and what they experience in the rest of their lives.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat Joins Open Source Java Project | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-11-06 15:05:03
narramissic writes "Red Hat has signed on to Sun's OpenJDK project and agreed to coordinate its own Java development efforts for Linux with the project. Red Hat will align the work it has done on IcedTea (its own implementation of some parts of the Java SE JDK) with OpenJDK. As part of its participation in OpenJDK, Red Hat will eventually create a compatible OpenJDK implementation for its Enterprise Linux distribution and will also use OpenJDK to create a runtime for its JBoss Enterprise Middleware that is optimized for a Linux environment."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Is CentOS Hurting Red Hat? | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2007-11-04 19:05:32
AlexGr writes "Jeff Gould raises an interesting question in Interop News: Why does Red Hat tolerate CentOS? The Community ENTerprise Operating System is an identical binary clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (minus the trademarks), compiled from the source code RPMs that Red Hat conveniently provides on its FTP site. It is also completely free, as in beer. CentOS provides no paid support, but it does track Red Hat updates and patches closely, and usually makes them available within a few hours or at most a few days of the upstream provider, which it refers to for legal reasons as "a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor." Free support for CentOS can be found in numerous places around the web, and a few third parties offer modestly priced paid support for those who want it."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over Red Hat CEO on Microsoft-Novell Deal | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2006-12-23 17:47:26
VE3OGG writes "The Seattle PI is running an interesting blurb from the Red Hat CEO on the current Novell-Microsoft deal that has been so lately lamented. According to Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik, the deal is 'old news.' 'Those were existing accounts and there is at least one of them that I can speak definitely that is also a Red Hat account,' Szulik said. 'So those were older engagements and we were not involved in competitive situations with those two or three years ago when they became Novell accounts.' The common client that Szulik speaks of would likely be Credit Suisse. The story also makes mention that while Deutsche Bank's chief technology officer, Clemens Jochum, praised the deal, the firm has been an early investor in SUSE from the beginning."

Alles over Open Season On Red Hat-JBoss | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Recent Research from Forrester | 2006-12-15 08:08:24
Within the space of a week during October, Oracle announced its Unbreakable Linux support program and Microsoft announced an agreement with Novell to help market SUSE Linux Enterprise. Red Hat is challenged by both of these actions, most likely because it is building a competing middleware stack through its acquisition of JBoss and its Java middleware products. Application development pros that rely on Red Hat Enterprise Linux should be worried about the vendor's new competitors. Red Hat will be hurt by customer defections driven by Oracle's and Microsoft's moves. Of the two threats to Red Hat's growth and future viability, the Microsoft-Novell deal offers customers the highest immediate value, constituting the larger threat to Red Hat's growth and future viability as the leading Linux distribution. But Red Hat must also improve its enterprise support to address all of its new competitive circumstances. http://www.forrester.com/go?docid=40913&src=RSS_TopicGroupFeed
Alles over Red Hat rains on Xen parade | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-08-02 03:11:36
The Xen open-source virtualization environment is not yet ready for enterprise use, a senior Red Hat executive has said, despite "unbelievable" customer demand and the fact that Novell has already started shipping the software.Xen, which is primarily being developed by U.S.-based start-up XenSource, allows users to run multiple operating systems as guest virtual machines on the same hardware. But while Novell this month started shipping the software with version 10 of its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server environment, Red Hat continues to have a lack of confidence in the virtualization newcomer, said Alex Pinchev, a vice president of international operations at the software company.Instead of trying to play catch-up with rival Novell and simply shipping Xen as included software with its operating system, Red Hat will attempt to build a full virtualization platform around the production the next version of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux server software, due to be released in December. That platform will include software for storage virtualization, for example, as well as systems management and provisioning tools, Pinchev said. He noted there was an "unbelievable" demand for virtualization software from customers. News source: CNET News.com Read full story...

Alles over Red Hat Sued Over Hibernate ORM Patent Claim | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2006-06-30 20:55:15
fmarines writes "Firestar Software has filed a patent claim against Red Hat for infringing on a patent Firestar filed in 2000 covering O/R mapping. The amount of the lawsuit was not disclosed. The complaint centers around JBoss 3, and the patent claims that JBoss was given prior notice that marketing, distribution, and support services violates Firestar's patent, and that Firestar 'has suffered and will continue to suffer substantial damages.' Firestar produces the ObjectSpark, an transactional object mapping engine which appears to not have had a new release since May 2003, according to the Firestar press release page."
