AP - Stocks edged higher in early trading Tuesday as solid housing data quelled worries about a melting economy, helping Wall Street turn its back on steep losses in the prior session. In the opening minutes, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 12.32, or 0.11 percent, to 10,954.43.

Straight from Japan and into our hearts come the GH-SPA-225W (left) and the GH-SPA-225QW, two foldable speakers that are compatible with the iPod. Due later this month in Japan for "an open price" (does free count as a price?), the two models differ only in relative size and appearance. Both output 2.5 watts of Apple-approved sound and are powered by four dry cell batteries that should last about 24 continuous hours, depending on working conditions and the Google translation. The speakers appear to be aimed at those who put a premium on mobility, rather than the other iPod speaker solutions that supposedly offer great sound for their (bigger) size. Chancellor Gordon Brown has said the British economy is "strong and strengthening", as he delivers his 10th Budget in the House of Commons. He cut road tax to zero for the smallest cars but put it up to £210 for the most polluting cars. Mr Brown said his Budget would "further strengthen Britain" for the challenges ahead and would "lock in stability and lead the world in new industries and technology". ARNHEM - Op het housefeest Hard Bass in het Arnhemse Gelredome heeft de politie in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag 132 mensen aangehouden. De meeste gasten werden betrapt op drugsbezit, zo meldde de politie zondag.Tegen 36 verdachten is proces-verbaal opgemaakt, nog eens 23 mensen kregen een dagvaarding en dertien personen betaalden direct een boete. In totaal inde de politie 2280 euro aan boetes. Xtc-pillen Volgens de politie lag het aantal aanhoudingen lager dan bij eerdere feesten, maar droegen de meeste verdachten meer xtc-pillen bij zich dan gebruikelijk, veelal zo'n tientallen pillen per persoon.

AMSTERDAM - Amy Winehouse keert Groot-Brittannië mogelijk voorgoed de rug toe. De Britse tabloid News of the World heeft een bron die zegt dat de zangeres het Caribische Saint Lucia nooit meer wil verlaten. Winehouse, die al lange tijd met drank- en drugsverslavingen kampt, verblijft al maanden op het eiland.Winehouse vertrok een half jaar geleden naar het Caribische eiland om aan een nieuw album te werken en te ontsnappen aan de verleidingen van Londen. Volgens een van haar vriendinnen bevalt het leven als eilandbewoner de zangeres zo goed, dat ze nooit meer terug naar Groot-Brittannië zou willen komen."Amy is dol op Saint Lucia en wil nooit meer weg. Ze heeft het idee dat het eiland haar goed doet en schrijft meer dan ze ooit gedaan heeft." Portemonnee Volgens ingewijden wil de 25-jarige artiest zich daadwerkelijk vestigen op het eiland en is ze al bezig met het nodige papierwerk."We weten van Amy's plannen om hier permanent te komen wonen. We hebben haar aanvraag ontvangen en behandelen die", zegt een anonieme ambtenaar tegen News of the World.Een verhuizing kan de geplaagde zangeres ook nog een leuk financieel voordeeltje opleveren. Amy Winehouse breekt optreden af

AMSTERDAM - Amy Winehouse heeft een show op het Caribische Saint Lucia afgebroken. Vrijdag was het de eerste keer in maanden dat de met drank- en drugsverslavingen kampende zangeres weer op het podium stond. Volgens een woordvoerder van de donkerharige zangeres moest het optreden tijdens het Saint Lucia Jazz Festival afgebroken worden vanwege de hevige regenval.Winehouse zou ondanks de storm geprobeerd hebben haar show voort te zetten, maar werd gedwongen het podium te verlaten. Teleurstelling Haar woordvoerder zegt dat de zangeres teleurgesteld is, omdat ze gehoopt had de bevolking van het eiland met haar optreden te kunnen bedanken voor hun gastvrijheid.De 'Rehab'-zangeres verblijft al enkele maanden op het Caribische eiland, waar ze aan een nieuw album zou werken.
