KentuckyFC writes "In 1924, the influential German mathematician, David Hilbert, calculated that a stationary mass should repel a particle moving towards or away from it at more than half the speed of light (as seen by a distant inertial observer). Now an American physicist has pointed out that the equal and opposite effect should also hold true: that a relativistic particle should repel a stationary mass. This, he says, could form the basis of a "hyperveolcity propulsion drive" for accelerating spacecraft to a good fraction of the speed of light. The idea is that the repulsion allows the relatavisitic particle to deliver a specific impulse that is greater than its specific momentum, an effect that is analogous to the elastic collision of a heavy mass with a much lighter, stationary mass, from which the lighter mass rebounds with about twice the speed of the heavy mass. Unlike other exotic hyperdrive proposals, this one can be tested using the world's largest particle accelerator, the LHC, which will generate beams of particles with the required energy (abstract). Placing a test mass next to the beam line and measuring the forces on it as the particles pass by, should confirm the theory--or scupper it entirely."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

I don't know if you remember the earlier story about HP Labs proving the existence of the Memristor that had been predicted in 1971 by Leon Chua, and has the nice property of maintaining a memory of the current that passes by it. It sure is tough to find flying-car news these days. (C'mon, Moller, we are you shipping?) But the Seattle Times comes through with a profile on Rafi Yoeli, the Israeli conceptualist behind the X-Hawk urban rescue vehicle, which broached our radar range back in 2004. Apparently, Yoeli's gotten a basic prototype to rise three feet, and says a marketable version could be in play by 2010, with a price tag of $1.5 million. Not quite the Volkswagen Beetle of flying cars, but any progress is good progress. – Mike Spinelli

One thing that seems to have gotten lost in the fray with all this iPhone hullabaloo is what is going to happen to the iPod now. Sure, the iPhone is a phone mixed with an iPod, but not everyone wants to spend $600 and get a phone/tablet with their music player. Apple has spent so much time and money getting TV shows and movies into the ITMS there's no way they won't release a new, high capacity multimedia player with the same slick widescreen format for people who don't want to make the jump to the iPhone.
Here's what I think we have to look forward to:I think that iPhone-esque iPods will soon be released. Look for larger capacities, probably 100GB, and a very similar design to the iPhone. We'll be treated to the same great touchscreen that automatically rotates the interface depending on how we hold it, which will be perfect for watching videos. But we'll lose the phone functions, and with those we'll also likely lose the camera and OS X interface. What makes the iPod so great is its simplicity, not its robust set of features, and by merging that notion with the new iPhone hardware Apple will be giving the iPod a serious upgrade.
So what do you think? Would you rather spend $300 on a widescreen, touchscreen iPod with a 100GB hard drive or $600 on an iPhone with 8GB? I've gotta be honest& the idea of a high-capacity touchscreen iPod sounds like a sweeter deal than the iPhone, especially the first generation version that lacks 3G and GPS. The smartest move might be grabbing one of those and then getting an iPhone in a year when its feature set is really humming. –Adam Frucci

In David Mamet's "The Water Engine," an amateur inventor derives an engine that runs on water, with which he plans to become rich and change the world. Too bad he's the only one in the whole play -- including the audience -- who doesn't know how forces beyond his control will conspire to extinguish his dream. Barring the same fate, a team of scientists from Minnesota University and Weizmann Institute of Science are working up a fuel-cell car that can crack its own hydrogen from a tank of water. According to New Scientist, the car will be able to produce hydrogen to run the fuel cell via a reaction of boron with water, producing a gas that can either power an internal combustion engine or generate electricity. The only emissions of such a reaction is boron oxide, which can be reconverted back to boron. A prototype could surface by 2009, if no "accidents" happen.
