Saudi-Arabië heeft een akkoord getekend met Groot-Brittannië voor de aanschaf van 72 toestellen van het type Eurofighter. Met de koop is een bedrag gemoeid van circa 14,7 miljard euro, meldde de zakenkrant Financial Times.
De vliegtuigen kosten het koninkrijk naar schatting 7,9 miljard euro. De rest van het bedrag zou opgaan aan raketten, reserveonderdelen en ondersteuning. Verwacht wordt dat vooral het Britse bedrijf BAE Systems zal profiteren van de order. Het leeuwendeel van het geld van de order zal naar deze firma vloeien. Verder heeft BAE goede vooruitzichten op onderhoudscontracten en moderniseringscontracten die op de lange termijn nog eens 14,7 miljard zouden kunnen opleveren.
De Eurofighter wordt gebouwd door een Europees consortium van bedrijven uit Groot-Brittannië, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Italië. Het project kampt met hoge aanloopkosten en tegenvallende verkoopcijfers.
