Reber Is Reber writes "The Wi-Fi Alliance announced a new wireless networking specification which will enable devices to establish simple peer-to-peer wireless connections without the need for a wireless router or hotspot. Wi-Fi Direct has a wide array of potential uses, many of which encroach on Bluetooth territory and threaten to make the competing wireless protocol obsolete. 'Wi-Fi Direct represents a leap forward for our industry. Wi-Fi users worldwide will benefit from a single-technology solution to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily among devices, even when a Wi-Fi access point isn't available,' said Wi-Fi Alliance executive director Edgar Figueroa. 'The impact is that Wi-Fi will become even more pervasive and useful for consumers and across the enterprise.' Ad hoc wireless networking has always been more complex and cumbersome than it is worth, and it maxes out at 11 mbps. Wi-Fi Direct will connect at existing Wi-Fi speeds-- up to 250 mbps. Wi-Fi Direct devices will also be able to broadcast their availability and seek out other Wi-Fi Direct devices. Wi-Fi Direct overlaps into Bluetooth territory. Bluetooth is a virtually ubiquitous technology used for wireless connection of devices like headphones, mice, or the ever-popular Bluetooth earpiece sticking out of everyone's head. Bluetooth uses less power, but also has a much shorter range and slower transfer speeds. Wi-Fi Direct can enable the same device connectivity as Bluetooth, but at ranges and speeds equivalent to what users experience with existing Wi-Fi connections."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

The big surprise of the Stevenote: new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store for the iPod touch Wi-Fi capabilities and the iPhone. If you buy songs from the iPod touch, they will sync back with iTunes on the desktop. It seems to work ultra-fast on the touch's Wi-Fi and has all the songs from the iTMS to go, as well as the same prices as the normal store.

In addition to having all the songs available for the same price, the home screen is a simplified version of the current desktop iTMS, with full search capabilities and a "What's Hot" tab. The previews of songs and videos looked extremely fast in Jobs' demo, faster than the desktop version, but we will tell you more in our hands-on later.

SAN FRANCISCO--September 5, 2007--Apple® today unveiled the iTunes® Wi-Fi Music Store, offering music fans the ability to browse, search, preview, purchase and download songs and albums from the iTunes Music Store over a Wi-Fi network directly onto their iPod® touch or iPhone(TM). With the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, music fans can start enjoying their music purchases immediately on their iPod touch or iPhone with no computer required. Once they connect their iPod touch or iPhone back to their PC or Mac®, downloaded music will automatically sync back into their iTunes library. If users have only partially downloaded a song or album onto their iPod touch or iPhone, their computer will complete the download automatically. Prices and selection on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store are the same as on the regular iTunes Store.
"The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store is really fun--you can browse, search, freely preview, buy and instantly download music right onto your iPod touch or iPhone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Innovative products like this keep iTunes at the forefront of the digital music revolution."
In addition, iTunes customers will now be able to create custom ringtones by selecting up to a 30-second segment from over a million participating songs on iTunes and easily sync them onto their iPhone. Once a customer has purchased a participating song from iTunes, including previously purchased participating songs, it will only cost 99 cents to make up to a 30-second segment of that song into a ringtone and easily sync it onto their iPhone. Customers can personalize their ringtones by choosing which portion of the song they want to use, and setting custom fade in and fade out points. iPhone users can assign a custom ringtone to be their default ringtone and they can also assign them to individual callers in their address book. Customers still have full use of the originally purchased song.
Apple today also released the next generation of the world's most popular music and video jukebox, iTunes 7.4, now available as a free download at www.iTunes.com. iTunes 7.4 includes a larger viewing area for movies and TV, filling the entire iTunes window for a richer, seamless video playback experience that looks better than ever. You can now rate entire albums as well as individual songs.

Both the new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and custom iTunes ringtones for iPhone will be available later this month. iTunes 7.4 is available immediately as a free download at www.itunes.com. Music purchased from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store is priced the same as music from the iTunes store. Ringtones are available for an additional 99 cents for participating songs that have previously been purchased from iTunes. Internet access is required and a broadband connection is recommended, fees may apply. The iTunes Store is not available in all countries.

In a marriage as cozy as coffee beans and foamed milk, Apple has teamed up with Starbucks to, yes, sell music. When your Wi-Fi powered iPod Touch or iPhone, or any laptop, is within range of a Starbucks, a button will pop up on the music store interface. Tap it, and you get songs recently played in that Starbucks, plus whatever music Starbucks is promoting at the time. Access to Starbucks' Wi-Fi network will be free (for iTunes shopping), and no hotspot login will be required.
Roll-out will start in NYC and Seattle, hitting 600 stores. By November, the SF area will have 350 stores. Apple and Starbucks plan to have all shops in major cities ready to go by end of 2008, and every Starbucks that has Wi-Fi by end of 2009.

Formerly available just for Windows XP, this $14.95 software download shows you an animated radar screen that not only indicates exactly where the hotspots are, but it automates your connection to that network with almost no effort at all. We're looking at our Linksys Wi-Fi router with disdain now that we've discovered how weak it is compared to this Etri Wi-Fi mofo. Besides the Etri router's awesome 240Mbps speed, it has a range far beyond ordinary Wi-Fi, cranking out signals at a claimed range of 100m to 1km. Sheesh. Our Linksys can barely get from one side of the house to the other.
Etri hops up that speed by using a combination of the 802.11n (so far, that's draft-N), and the MIMO spec that uses multiple signals to increase bandwidth. Plus, its security protocols have been beefed up to keep those curb-dwelling bandwidth suckers off your ass. It's only been demonstrated in Korea so far, but this monster will give you a preview of the Wi-Fi tech that will be commonplace in a year or two. – Charlie White

Two months after Black Hat, a vulnerability for Mac systems with Wi-Fi has been put to rest. Unearthed at the hacker convention, the exposure was originally denied by Apple. The AirPort release on September 21st, however, has proved otherwise. The Apple advisory, which does not give credit to SecureWorks (those behind finding the vulnerability), states that "two separate stack buffer overflows exist in the AirPort wireless driver's handling of malformed frames". The PowerBook, iMac, Mac Pro, Xserve and PowerPC-based Mac Mini are all affected. The MacBook, MacBook Pro and Intel-based Mac Mini are not.Unfortunately, Wi-Fi-enabled Macbooks and MackBook Pro systems are susceptible to a different heap buffer overflow. A third issue affecting third-party wireless software was also addressed. This bug affects Intel-based Mac Mini, MacBook and MacBook Pro computers equipped with wireless. If an application is affected, (at the time no application is known to be affected) an attacker in local proximity may be able to trigger an overflow.
