Internet Explorer 7 sucks on standards

Alles over Internet Explorer 7 sucks on standards | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Software Headlines :: Index | 2006-08-09 21:45:21
Windows experts and web developers are unhappy with Microsoft. Yes, again. Since Internet Explorer 7 was announced, Microsoft has promised that supporting current web standards was high on its list. It turns out, though, that by at least one report, IE7 will only support 54% of the CSS 2.1 standard, as compared to 52% in IE6 and 93% in Firefox 1.5 and 96% in Opera 9. In addition to making a whole lot of web developers lives a whole lot more difficult, IE7s lack of standards support is turning off a lot of Microsofts most vocal fans, including Paul Thurrott, who runs the excellent Paul Thurrotts SuperSite for Windows. In a recent Windows IT Pro column, Thurrott accuses Microsoft of leaving users and web developers in the lurch, concluding My advice is simple: Boycott IE. Its a cancer on the Web that must be stopped. IE isnt secure and isnt standards-compliant, which makes it unworkable both for end users and Web content creators. Ouch. ReadSource: http://fanpotai.wordpress.com/2006/08/09/internet-explorer-7-sucks-on-standards/ Vash the Stampede

Revised naming for Internet Explorer 7

Alles over Revised naming for Internet Explorer 7 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-08-05 16:22:41
The Internet Explorer product team today announced a change in their planned naming scheme for Internet Explorer 7 after concerns from the wider community.In late May, a post on the team's blog stated that the name "IE7+" was to be used to refer to the version of Internet Explorer 7 that ran on Windows Vista. This was to differentiate between the differing feature set offered by Microsoft's latest browser when used on Windows XP and on Windows Vista. A backlash from the wider community ensued, many stating that such a name would cause confusion for users, particularly when it could be interpreted as "IE7 or above".Responding to these concerns, the product team announced that the new version would be known simply as Internet Explorer 7, regardless of the operating system it was run on.  For documentation describing platform-specific features, the term "Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista" is to be used.The move has both surprised and pleased testers of the popular web browser, which is to be released later this year. An anonymous reader writes to mention a review of the latest Beta release for Internet Explorer 7 on Paul Thurrott's SuperSite. From the article: "While it's not enough to make me switch from Firefox yet--I still love certain Firefox features such as inline search--it's no longer an object of ridicule either. IE 7.0 Beta 3 includes huge functional and security advantages of IE 6 and is an absolute no brainer for anyone choosing to stick with IE. If you are an IE user, head over to the Microsoft Web site and pick up IE 7.0 Beta 3 today." ZDNet has some first impressions of the release as well.

The review focuses on the user interface, security, and compatibility of Internet Explorer 7 compared to IE6, Opera, and Firefox. They conclude: "The world of online browsing has finally reached a point where, by-and-large, it doesn't matter what browser a user chooses or how they decide to browse the web, for the most part pages will display the way they should, the users will be secure, and malware needs to find a new venue. This latest build of Internet Explorer 7 only strengthened our opinion."

Alles over Microsoft Security Advisory (913333): Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Exe | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Latest Security Advisories | 2006-06-28 19:20:42
Revision Note: Advisory Published Advisory Summary:Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a vulnerability in older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Based on our investigation, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the user's system in the security context of the logged-on user. The attacker could do this by one or more of the following actions: By hosting a specially crafted Windows Metafile (WMF) image on a malicious Web site; By convincing a user to open a specially crafted e-mail attachment; By convincing a user to click on a link in an e-mail message that takes the user to a malicious Web site; or By sending a specially crafted e-mail message to Outlook Express users, which they view in the preview pane. Note This is not the same issue as the one addressed by Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-001 (912919). The vulnerability exists in: Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 on Microsoft Windows Millennium. Microsoft has determined that an attacker who exploits this vulnerability would have no way to force users to visit a malicious Web site. Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link that takes them to the attacker's Web site. It could also be possible to display specially crafted Web content by using banner advertisements or by using other methods to deliver Web content to affected systems. In an e-mail based attack, customers would have to click a link to the malicious Web site, preview a malicious e-mail message, or open an attachment that exploited the vulnerability. In both Web-based and e-mail based attacks, the code would execute in the security context of the logged-on user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. Microsoft will continue to investigate these reports and provide additional guid

Revision Note: Advisory updated to include additional mitigating factors. Msdds.dll file versions have also been revised: updated file version from 7.0.9446.0 to 7.0.9466.0 and added file version 7.0.9064.9143. Advisory Summary:Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a possible vulnerability in Internet Explorer. We are not aware of attacks that try to use the reported vulnerabilities or of customer impact at this time. Microsoft is aggressively investigating the public reports. The Microsoft DDS Library Shape Control (Msdds.dll) is a COM object that could, when called from a Web page displayed in Internet Explorer, cause Internet Explorer to unexpectedly exit. This condition could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site. This COM Object is not marked safe for scripting and is not intended for use in Internet explorer. Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers. This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.
