uniquebydegrees writes, "Infoworld reports that on Tuesday Microsoft quietly released the second update for MS06-042. This is the cumulative patch for IE that actually introduced a new security hole into systems that applied the update. Microsoft re-released the patch back in August, but it now turns out that the updated patch had yet another vulnerability similar to the first, once again discovered by folks at eEyE Digital Security. As with the previous hole, it concerned the handling of long URLs from web sites using HTTP 1.1 with compression."

Microsoft's Patch Tuesday activity carried over from last week into this one as the software giant promised to issue a fix for its latest Internet Explorer security patch, which apparently carries a security bug of its own.The vulnerability could allow attackers to take complete control over a Windows PC running IE 6 with Service Pack 1 and the MS06-042 update installed, according to a Microsoft security advisory published this week. The flaw lies in the way IE handles long Web addresses. The firm has not yet said when the new patch will be ready."An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user," Microsoft reported in its security advisory. "Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights."In one attack scenario, an attacker could host a Web site containing a page that would exploit this vulnerability. Microsoft explained that compromised Web sites and those that accept or host user-provided content or advertisements may contain specially crafted content that could exploit this flaw. In all cases, however, an attacker would have no way of forcing users to visit these Web sites. Instead, an attacker would have to persuade users to visit the sites, typically by getting them to click on a link in an e-mail or instant messenger message. On Tuesday, Microsoft reported that after people apply the MS06-042 update, rated "critical" by Microsoft, IE may crash when certain websites are viewed. The problem affects IE6 with Service Pack 1 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems according to the software giant."Microsoft has identified an issue with the security update MS06-042," the company said in a statement Tuesday. It plans to re-release the bulletin and patch on Aug. 22 for all affected users.The problem occurs when IE users view Web sites that use version 1.1 of HTTP alongside compression, according to Microsoft's notice. HTTP, or hypertext transfer protocol, is the standard protocol used to browse websites.MS06-042 is an update for IE that addresses eight vulnerabilities in the popular browser. It is one of a dozen security updates that Microsoft released last week on Patch Tuesday.Patches have caused trouble at times, on occasion prompting Microsoft to fix already released updates. In April, it released a second version of a Windows Explorer update because the original interfered with Hewlett-Packard software and nVidia drivers. "Microsoft has set back Web development by an immeasurable amount of time. My advice is simple: Boycott IE. It's a cancer on the Web that must be stopped. IE isn't secure and isn't standards-compliant, which makes it unworkable both for end users and Web content creators." With the redesign of my own site last month, I discovered just how non-compliant IE is with basic CSS: IE 52% vs. Firefox 93%. Is Microsoft purely incompetent and tone-deaf to customers — or simply counting on IE's non-compliance remaining a de-facto standard?"

The wildly popular Firefox extension StumbleUpon released this morning a toolbar for Internet Explorer users. The service lets you browse around web sites that have been recommended by friends and other users with interests similar to your own. Users can also write reviews of sites. The end result is a very compelling user experience thats likely to explode now that its working with the market dominant browser.Lead by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith and Justin LaFrance, the company has received investments from Google board member Ram Shriram, Lotus founder Mitch Kapor and several others. Pages targetted to users in certain locations and demographic groups are displayed at most once to each user and a cost of 5 cents per targeted visitor. Pages for which display is paid are clearly marked.The company told me that there are now an average of 2.3 million pages viewed through StumbleUpon daily. There have been 2.3 million downloads to date of the FireFox extension and 6 million sites have been reviewed through the system. Fourteen languages are supported.I have to confess that I had heard about StumbleUpon before today but had never used it. It is so much fun! Its exactly the kind of thing thats likely to make the web fun again for many people - including support for IE is key. I know that I find plenty of high quality content through RSS feeds, TechMeme, Digg, etc. but for most of the world StumbleUpon is going to fill a serious need for group-selected high-quality content and online community. The latest update to Microsoft's much-maligned Internet Explorer is getting a plug from an unlikely source.The third beta version of IE 7 debuted last week. Updates to the software, due for final release at the end of this year, include tabbed browsing, RSS support, a search box on a more streamlined toolbar and improved security. Critics of the browser remain legion. But one person from outside the Microsoft campus who's got some good things to say is Blake Ross, one of the original developers of Firefox, the browser that's had IE looking over its shoulder for quite a while now. In an interview with Todd Bishop of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Ross said this of the test version: "The truth is that it actually looks pretty good." Two new security flaws have been discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer, one of which could be replicated in Mozilla's Firefox, security experts have warned.
Code for both of the vulnerabilities has been published, but currently there are no reports of attackers who have taken advantage of these flaws, the SANS Internet Storm Center, which monitors network threats, said in an advisory released Wednesday.
The flaw that affects both IE and Firefox is related to the handling of the object.documentElement.outerHTML property, according to the advisory. That technology is used to access documents delivered from one Web site to another.
Attackers could exploit the IE or Firefox flaw using what's known as cross-site scripting, allowing them to view the contents of one open browser from a second browser open on the user's system, said Monty Ijzerman, senior manager of McAfee's Global Threat Group. The attackers, as a result, could swipe sensitive information, such as online banking data, from one of the sites, for example.
The second flaw is related to the way HTA applications are processed. A user could be tricked into double-clicking on a malicious file and remote code could be executed, Ijzerman said. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability to read files on a system or install rootkits, which make system changes to hide another piece of possibly malicious software.

A new Internet Explorer beta shows that Microsoft is trying to put its browser security woes behind it. The software maker plans to release the third and last beta version of IE 7 on Thursday, getting closer to final delivery by the end of 2006. It will be the first major update to the popular Web browser in five years, and much of the focus for the new version is on security. "Security was the No. 1 investment we made in IE 7, in terms of our development resources," Tony Chor, Microsoft's group program manager for the browser, said in an interview.
